The right CD-RW media that will work for other DVD players

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I've heard alot about cd-rw media that will work on any dvd players that claim to be VCD compliant. These DVD players are Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, RCA, GE, JVC, Pioneers, and Phillips. Quick tests at a few local electronics stores show that only two will work and the other will only work with VCDs that were professionally made by VCD companies. Pioneers and Phillips DVD players work flawlessly on any type of cd-r/cd-rw media burnt at 1x,2x,4x,6x, or 8x. What type or brand(s) of CD-RW silver media do i need to get in order for the other DVD players to accept it? The one i've used is as silver as it can get. I've also been told that Sony cd-r media will work on the Sony DVD players, is this true? Also there is another type of cd-r media made by PNY which claims to be video compliant ( blue coating on the outside ring of the disc ), will this work? I have a toshiba 3109 and it refused to play the burnt vcd.

I took a Video CD burned on a Memorex CD-RW and it played on every player in the store. I tried Panasonic,Toshiba,Pioneer and Sony. I have Philips and although iot does play both CD-R and CD-RW it pauses at various spots on every cd I have made. This did not happen on any of the players at Best Buy. I have spoken about this to Philips and they will hopefully be upgrading their firmware in the near future.

A month ago I bought a DVD player Philips 750, which is capable to read both CDR and CDRW media. I made a several trials with home made videos, films burned with different kind of media and I didn't have any problems. Everything is OK. I have to admit that it was excellent choice. The only problem I noticed is that my home made films do not have time counter, and I am not able to rewind them, even if they were made with CeQuadrat Video Pack 4 with chapters, indexes, etc. Also I was trying to change seq interval in Xing Mpeg Encoder to 1 per GOP, but without success.

Al, You are right, Memorex CD-RW media will be acknowledged by the other DVD players others than the Pioneers and Phillips. However, The Toshiba is giving me frame by frame pictures with missing spots in the pictures. What gives? This same media will play fine with the Pioneer and Phillips.

Now that I think about it there were some spots on the Toshiba. They only had one model there. The Panasonic and the Sony played them with no problems

Thank you for your many valuable inputs. Now i know what to use if i need to play the vcd on the other players. At this time my Pioneer will chew on any media i throw at it, so i am happy with the DVD player. I am still having problem with audio/video sync after 20 minutes or so into the capturing. I have exhausted all my options at this time. I thought i had it licked before, but it just kinda minor out of sync problem, very annoying...

In reply to the video and audio sync problem, ie 20 minutes into the capture - here's a solution: make sure your hard disk has been defragmented before the capture. Plus it helps to have a high speed hard disk. If that doesn't work - shorten your capture periods to about 10 minutes or so.
