Media coverage:

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Aircraft down with sixty souls aboard, vast news coverage, Jet down with 169 aboard with ten survivors, and not a word. I am so proud of our news media. They can be counted on to cover priority events. 169 people are of no importance, but sixty, WOW!!! They are all over it like flies on a pile of you know what.

Notforlong...

Nothing personal, but it is a little easier for US media to cover something right in our own backyard than it is of the coast of Africa... might have a little to do with it, plus the fact that the 85 people apparently killed were all US citizens, and Alaska Airlines is flown a lot by the people here on the west coasts...

Deaths close to home usually do get more attention...

Notforlong: We in the US and Canada usually get better coverage of plane crashes that occur on our land, and in our waters. We also have plenty of helicopters with news cams ready to fly out and film at a moment's notice.

It's hard to cover a plane crash in another country that doesn't have the infrastructure to send us the news and the videotape.

Don't assume that all of us here on the board are predjudiced against everyone who is not white. It's simply untrue.

Yeah, but for crying out loud....a plane crash killing 160 people should be more important than Elian Gonzalez' grandmas.

-- Kyle (fordtbonly@aol.com), January 31, 2000.

I don't live anywhere near the west coast and all I here about is the one crash. It wouldn't be that hard to at least mention that they might have unconfirmed reports of another crash somewhere else, possibly even in the same newscast. It would only take a few seconds.

I have recently, been brought to mind, that the prejudice crapola, was human man induced. I had my faults, on inter-marriage. Until my Red Neck Son, married a full blood East Egypt Queen, who talks more southern than we do. Damn! that girl is good and frugal! Her Dad, would look right at home, on a camel's back, sheets swarthed around his body, until he opened his mouth. Southern speek, he knows no other, So then that brings me to my last hang-up. Blacks having children with white partners. I just had to give it up. They are beautiful children. Thank you, God, for showing me, the error, of my ways and the beauty of your purpose. Gonna get flamed or abolished on this one.

OT...you are my soulmate, I think. Who gives a tinker's damn about skin color. Wish I could have had your son's luck. Kyle

OT,

It's never too late to learn, "love" is the key. May the gods smile on you and yours.

Planes crashing! 160+ dead in Africa. 80 in USA. Just a brief mumble on Africa. The crash here will be news for days to come. If anyone is looking for some sense to this, and finds it, for God's sake let me know.

O.T.It took guts to say that - good job

-- Bob (bmoss3@prodigy.net), January 31, 2000.

Ok, spill the guts....black women are gorgeous! Angela Bassett, Jada Pinkett, even Whoopi!!!...she has such personality! Any Black women here....am I racist?

P.S. Stacey Dash in Clueless, and Elise Neal in Scream 2

-- Kyle (fordtbonly@aol.com), January 31, 2000.

Well we went from discussing possible racist bias in news reporting, despite the fact of geographical location, to racial-based sexual fetishes...

I don't care what color you like your sexual partners, I don't even care what species you prefer for your sexual releases... 88 people died in my back yard, on an airline that millions of us westerners have flown on, and all you can do is relate that to interracial sex fantasies!!!

Sick fuckers... this thread was a waste of bandwidth...

-- Carl (clilly@goentre.com), February 01, 2000.

I hate the fact that we have so little overseas reporting. We have no perspective here.

-- Mara (MaraWayne@aol.com), February 01, 2000.

This thread brings to mind channel 2 news, thought they had someone from the coast guard.. the anchor asked what brought down the plane?

This asshole replied "It was shot down by Howard Stearn!"

Real funny... the anchors apologized for not screening better, he got his "4 seconds of fame".... jerk...

Funny don't seem to remember any shortage of coverage on the embassy bombings. Oh yes I forgot, a few of us "great" Americans lost our lives. Right, right that's why CNN got over there, almost forgot about that. Now we can see our own prejudice for sure and wonder why the world is sick of us.

Why wait for CNN to tell us why they don't go there, we have the public making the execuses on CNN's behalf and hope we are stupid enough not to see the prejudice reeking from every word.

Mara:

I agree with you. Joe Sixpack wouldn't no what to make of it any since most of them have zero geopolitical knowledge (or even know what the word means) anyway. But the intellectuals have really have no execuse to compalin any more. We do have this thing called the "Internet". It does let you bypass the filtered news now. For starters here is one of the main dailies in Kenya:

Just as an after-thought to my first post above, I can almost visualize the people around the world amazed by the American stupidity to show their hypocracy in such a dramtic and clear fashion. Here we have 169 people killed on Kenya Airwais and hardly a mention on CNN, but instead the world gets to see non-stop reporting of the Alaska Airlines crash with 80 odd people. And when they think back they'll realize that probably the only reason that anything was reported when the embassey trajedies happened was because Americans were involved. Man, we have got to be looking very stupid around the world today, and I'm sure people won't forget this easily since it demonstrates our complete lack of sensitivity to anything in the world that doesn't affect us, no matter how sad the trajedy. It also demonstrates our total and complete pre-occupation with ourselves.

Interested Spectator...I couldn't agree more. Thanks for the posts and the link to the Kenya paper! Aloha!
