Seeking Out Useful Information I teach nutrition in many classrooms. I find teaching in the classroom is challenging. Parnell's book, "Why Do I have to learn This, brings things together. Some students really question why they have to learn something or do something. Teaching is so much easier when the students are working on a project. Projects that are student driven. Projects that possibly the student worked at developing.

In reading and studying the past month, I have found transformative learning and project-based learning very intriguing. I feel the reading from the articles and books have given me an understanding of what it is like to teach today.

Brookfield has also given me some insight into using reflective teaching. Patricia Cranton's, No One Way, gave an interesting slant on teaching. I think of some older teachers and that information could definitely help them.

If teachers believed in learner-driven education, I feel learning could be made easier. The learner could negotiate and plan their own learning experience. Doing something you enjoy makes it fun and meaningful. The learner begins to build confidence in a skill. Some of the skills may have lasting implications for their future and decisions in life.

Review of Literature. I've decided my interest in a thesis project lie in the topic of Project-based learning in nutrition to upper elementary students. These sources should get me started on my project.

Allen, Donna Personalizing the Food Pyramid, 1996 Presents a strategy that can be used in evaluating students eating and nutritional patterns. This creates a personal pyramid of food choices that lets students explore their eating habits.

King, Marianne: Walsh, Joan Healthy Choices for Kids: Nutrition Education Program Based on the 1990 United States Dietary Guidelines. Chapter One:Eat a Wide Variety of Foods. This kit has five levels and provides tools to teach students good nutrition. It shows how important it is to eat a variety.

Metheny, Dixie: Hollowell, Julia Investigation: Fodd for Thought-1994 Presents activities using the theme of school lunch menus and healthful eating habits to reinforce making predictions using computational skills.

Nutrtion/Activities Resource Guide-1983 The resource guide suggests activities to help special education students make appropriate choices about their nutritional habits. It consists of five themes with objectives in each.

United States Department of Agriculture Dietary Guidelines and Your Health: Health Educators Guide to Nutrition and Fitness. This manual was designed to help incorporate the seven Dietary Guidelines for Americans, published by United States Department of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, into a health or physical education curriculum and to make nutrition education contemporary, relevant and fun for students.

Zeller, Pat: Jacobson, Michael F. Eat, Think, To Be Healthy! Creative Nutrtion Activities for Children. This book provides an activity-oriented guide for nutrition instruction in grades 3-6. This also gives information as to teaching nutrition in the different subject areas.
