What is a VCD? Is it the same as CDG?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I recently was given a Pioneer Karaoke system, model CLD-D505. I understand this may be a system from Asia. I went out and purchased two CDG discs and played them on the system. The music was playing, but there was no video on the screen. Did I buy the wrong type of disc? I know it plays the laser discs, I've tried them. I also tried to get information from the Pioneer website. No luck. Please help! Thanks, Barbara Melius

CD-G is one incarnation of the CD format that JVC among others tried to popularize but has since died a natural death. It's not the same as Video CD. To play your CD-Gs you have to find specific players that say so; they are difficult to find, and those that are will likely be JVC. That Pioneer you have is a LaserDisc player which I get as a cue from the CLD- part of the model number, and will neither play Video CDs nor, as you've found, CD-G's. Okay the CD-G will play but will do so as a normal audio CD; you won't see the graphics, which is basically what differs CD-G from a conventional audio CD.
