one of my PCs wont play vcd anymore. i cant remember installing anything new, still plays mpg files but wont let me open a dat file, or even copy it to my harddrive! i had be using xing dvd, powerdvd, and ms media player. now none of them work. they play fine on my other pc using these same programs, and play on standalone dvd players. some were made with ezcd, others with winoncd. is my registry screwed up? if so, how can i fix it?

Check to see if you have scsi1hlp.vxd in your windows\system\iosubsys subdirectory. This file is necessary to allow the IDE CDROMs to emulate SCSI drives and allow assess to the VCD. Without this file, you can not read or copy the *.dat files. This file is also needed when using Adaptec CDR software but interferes with NERO. NERO will remove it when it is installed. Other CD burner programs will do this also. You can get this file from your windows 98 or 95 CDROM. It is in one of the CAB files or you may copy it from one of your PCs which has the file. I do not remember which one. I would suggest that once you find it, keep a copy of it someplace else on your hard drive so that you can restore it. If you want to run Nero or other CD burner programs, write a bat program to remove and restore it this subdirectory. Remove it when you want to burn and restore it when you want to run VCDs
