I just did a search on Hotbot.com, which is the engine I usually use, and I noticed today that all of the dates on the first page of results say 12/30/1899!

I tried different keywords, but same thing every time! Weird.

In your regional settings you probably have your short date format set to display only 2 digits. Most of us have changed that to 4 because of the year 2000. You can change that in your control panel settings.

The reason you can't consistently reproduce this problem is that Hotbot doesn't have just one Internet computer, it has bank after bank of servers. If the software on one of the clustered servers is messed up or the date/time is somehow messed up on that computer, then you'll get the strange results, but only if your request is being served by that computer.

All major Internet sites use large server farms to keep up with the massive number of hits they have to process and to provide for failsafe redundancy.

The local date/time settings or even your computer's own date and time have no bearing on the date and time displayed by a web server, unless it is using a script to extract the date and time from your local computer. This does not seem to apply to Hotbot.

Thanks Ceemeister, that might partially explain it. I'm getting consistent results...

First page, all results have same date: 12/30/1899

Second page, all results have no dates at all.

Third page, all results appear to have proper dates (1998, 1999, 2000)

If your theory is correct they may have one server kick out the first ten results on page one, another server kick out results for 11-20, and a third server doing the rest of the results which don't get as many hits. If that's the case, then it seems at least 2 of their servers are screwed up.

Either that or it's just some smartass hacker having a few laughs.
