CAN SONY DVP525D READ CD-R OR CD-RW?

No, no, and no!!! Gosh please read some of the older items on the subject in this forum first. This subject has been talked about a lot. If you are new, get back at past items first and you will see it's likely to have been covered there. Anyway, for the nth time, new Sony DVD players like 525 and 725 do not have dual lasers and therefore can't read CD-Rs. Older ones like 515 and 715 HAVE dual lasers and can therefore read CD-Rs.
