OT: Juno vs. AOL

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I have seen various comments about AOL on this board. None complimentary. I am currently using AOL, and have nothing good to say about them either. Well, one good thing...you can insert a pic in email without having to attach a file, but only to other AOL members. And there is the rub.

AOL has the largest customer base and most of my buddies use AOL. So for now, I continue to stay with them.

But, a couple of weeks ago I received a CD from Juno. Version 4.0. I downloaded it and it appears to be a viable alternative to AOL. Yeah, I have been either too lazy or busy to check it out more. But, like I said 'everyone' is on AOL for now.

I would appreciate any comments from you guys about Juno.

P.S. Y2K related? Last week Juno sent me another CD with version 3.0. Ummm...brain is crampin' a bit....

I find it hard to believe that Juno would be worse for AOL...except for the wide lead AOL has in generating busy signals...I've had horrible luck with AOL when it comes to connecting and I wouldn't recommend AOL to anybody.

Excuse the typo please. I meant to say that I would find it hard to believe that Juno would be worse THAN AOL. AOL would have to be the ONLY option available before I would ever use it again. Those busy signals have a way of ruining one's day, you know.

THIS thread is IDLE, off-topic, chit-chat....

Hey Kyle, just for kicks call up AOL and tell them you want to cancle, when they ask you why ,tell them that it costs too much and you want to try another. They will offer you a month for free to give you time to think about it. I know of two people who did this, and each got 3 months free out of the deal. They kept on giving free sevice, this was last winter, I bet they still do it. BTW I pay only $16 mo. . Whats AOL charge??

Info...thanks man. I may possibly try that. The Juno service is 9.95 per month. But, like I said I haven't really checked it out enough. If I can get here on Juno then I will probably switch and tell AOL to take a walk.

-- Kyle (fordtbonly@aol.com), January 30, 2000.

Info...forgot to answer your question. AOL is now charging 21.95. What service do you use?

-- Kyle (fordtbonly@aol.com), January 30, 2000.

INever..I thought I already stated the obvious-OT.

Ok, you other guys, I got off my ass and here I am using Juno instead of AOL. So, what is the catch? What will I not get with Juno that I got with AOL?

-- Kyle (fordtbonly@aol.com), January 30, 2000.

Juno looks great so far. It brings up IE when I start it's web function. It was easy to transfer the TB2000 link from AOL. I will have to be busy to import other favorite links before I cancel AOL

-- Kyle (fordtbonly@aol.com), January 30, 2000.

sorry kyle, nooffense, but why pay anything? just get freei.net or altavista.net...you gotta look at ads but trailer trash dont mind ads if they're saving a few measly bucks, right?

-- INever (Inevercheckmy@onebox.com), January 30, 2000.

INever, if I ever get off my lazy trailer park trash ass I will check out Altavista.....I have used it as a search engine before. But, I am skeptical about anything being free. The ads suck, but who cares if it is free. Does Altavista give a free phone# and that is it?

Try worldshare.net, it is free, no banner adds.

You can always say I referred you :o)

Kyle, if you get tired of all those Juno ads, just delete the ADS folder in your Juno directory. They do take up space. When you restart Juno, it will create a new ADS directory. ;)

I use Juno for my business email, so it doesn't get confused with my personal email.

I have had nothing but bad luck with AOL. Stay the heck away from them, if you haven't already signed up. If you are signed up, find someone else to work with.

I've used Blazenet for a while, and have had some problems, and I may try Earthlink. Both cost the same ($19.95).

AOL disabled my last computer (an old 486) by fooling around with the dll files, and I couldn't get replacements and no one would look at it cheaply enough ($50-60 an hour to tinker sucks).

-- Bill (billclo@blazenet.net), January 30, 2000.

I have AltaVista/FreeI/NetZero on my PC, one will always work. Paying 20 bucks a month for the net doesn't make sense anymore.

-- Dan G (thepcguru@hotmail.com), January 30, 2000.

Thanks to everyone. AOL should be history on my computer soon. I hope I can get rid of them without any glitches.

-- Kyle (fordtbonly@aol.com), January 30, 2000.

AOL in Baltimore is called AmericaOnheLl. Enough said.

-- Hokie (Hokie_@hotmail.com), January 30, 2000.

forget AOL, Juno and banner ads. Try freewwweb.com, it's totally free, the only thing you have to do is make their web page your home page. I've been using it for over a week. No survey, no ad, no nothing. Really free.

-- b (nah@rathernot.com), January 30, 2000.

Hokie, I call it AOHell. Starting to use Juno now..just want a smooth transition if possible. I have to import my AOL bookmarks to IE before I cancel among other things.

Maybe you or someone else can explain to me why AOL steals my cursor. I never know when it is going to happen. It is never any certain action I perform or amount of time I have been on line. But, for no apparent reason and without warning, my cursor disappears and I have to ALT+CNTL+DEL and sign back on.

I have never had this happen when using IE.

Any ideas on this will be appreciated. Thanks, Kyle

Cherri - that crappy Worldshare really screwed up my friends PC, completely changes Internet Explorer, has NO un-install, etc.etc. I'm waiting for a reply from their 'support' about how to GET RID of it.

-- Dan G (thepcguru@hotmail.com), January 31, 2000.

sheesh.....glad I didn't try it yet Dan
