Jobs-R-Us

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Sleeptalking : One Thread

I'm not having the same work problems as Molly, mine are of the "My boss doesn't know squat about anything I do" variety, with an added pinch of "living with a boss without experience in what she teaches". Doesn't it seem that our generation gets the major shaft in the workplace? I hate whiners as much as the next person and I'm definitely not in it for the $$$. If you're 25- 35, you have a sign around your neck that says "treat me like a dog-and I'll like it, cuz I'm afraid of loosing my job like Dad did" It's almost like Boomers get preferential treatment because they expect to. We get treated like dirt because we expect it. Any comments? (or is everybody dead in Molly-land????)

i'm just bothered by molly's feelings of shame, or whatever, regarding her boss. And how molly suspects she is the Wrong Kind of employee. You don't owe anyone anything except the work you are paid to do, and even if they are paying you, they owe you basic respect. and that's all there is to it.

you can be angry at your boss without having to flagellate yourself -- "i'm lucky i even have a job", etc.

re: Jobs-R-Us

i'll give an employer my skills and effort-- though i won't let them pile on shit just because they pay me... i expect to be compensated on an equitable basis for what i do... and of course i do take perks-- e.g., office supplies. Until we get a national system of free health care and paid holidays, I'll make myself feel better by scamming letterhead, envelopes, legal pads, and pens... And a nationally-mandated 'living wage' wouldn't hurt, either... I'm good at what I do, and I'm an adaptable learner. But there is a delight in biting a hand that feeds you (and keeps on feeding!)

I think our generation tends to suffer from major low self-esteem issues. Why should we feel lucky to have a job if we have something unique to offer our employer. We need to develop a little self worth.
