Study Group

greenspun.com : LUSENET : UR General Chemistry : One Thread

This is kind of in response to the evening help session question. Is anyone interested in a study group? I started going to the organized one last semester and the participants didn't really seem interested in studying and the group eventually failed. Anyone who seriously wants to share ideas with other people who want to participate please respond to this.

Ms. Benson's posting is to the point of the original question, why there is "no evening help anymore." According to past experience, there were only very few students who were interested and used that service. Most of the time, the TAs "on watch" felt they had wasted their time. While it is the TAs' responsibility to assist students in their study, they also have their own valuable work to do, their own study and research. We can again set up evening help sessions for certain periods, when students request and then also use such service. Contact your TAs with suggestions. It is also possible that web services, such as this on-line discussion group, help providing answers to questions, possibly even at more convenient or pressing times.

Sure, I would be interested in a Study Group. Anyone else?

I would go, but taking any more time out of my schedule would be a death wish. How is this going to be any more helpful than a recitation...will be worth my precious time??

Speaking as someone who has survived many undergraduate chemistry courses as well as graduate courses, I would like to say that I would have had much more trouble without my study group. I recommend finding a couple students who have about the same level of knowledge as yourself and getting together with them on a regular basis. I found that the little things that I did not pick up on in class, my partners would often be able to explain them to me and vise versa. Take care not to make your group too big, and that one person is not doing all the helping. There, thats my two cents on that subject, hope it influenced someone to join a group.

I am very interested in forming small study groups. In support of what Jason Kellogg has stated, I have had a lot of success with study groups where all the participants are *truly* interested in understanding the material and can work with one another.

I am also interested in participating in a study group. My only concern is the time which it would require. However, if people are committed, I would be more than willing to join!

Study groups would be great. Everyone really seems interseted...but the question is how do we form one? should we all meet up at designated place...say after chem lecture?

Hi, I posted the original message. Another student and I met Sat night and discussed getting together two nights a week (maybe the Mon and Weds before class). I would like to meet with anyone who is interested in attending study sessions after class on tues. If you have a class following Chem, at least stop and give me your phone number or e-mail address so I can contact you with more information as it becomes available. I will be outside of the lecture hall doors by the green room after class and I'll wear my U of R hat so you'll all know who to look for. If a large number of people are interested then mabye a few smaller groups with similar schedules could get organized.
