So You Think An Oil Shortage Only Means High Gasoline Prices?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Here is a very, *very* short list of petroleum products.

I found these just from 2 different sites. There are probably thousands more, but for anyone who doesn't think an oil shortage will affect them, or who thinks that it will only affect gasoline prices, this should be a small eye-opener.

Look at this list and then look at everything around you. How many of those items could be manufactured today if oil was not available? If you don't want to go through the entire list, simply consider that plastics can't be manufactured without petroleum.

Great post Steve! =)

And everything else that is not on this list is probably delivered by truck drivers who are now paying higher fuel costs which must be passed on to you, the consumer.

Great list!

Now we'll all find out just how interconnected everything is... globally. Or not.

Kind'a think renewable/alternative energy and natural products might experience a resurgent interest.

There is NO oil shortage......geez, you guys spew the most ridiculous garbage out.......

Where is the doofus that was predicting $80 per barrel oil within a month.....that was a couple of weeks ago and it's no higher now than it was then.....

Of course he wasn't willing to put his money where his mouth is......

Hey, let's take bets on what the next 'crisis' some folks here will latch onto in a month or two when it is clear that oil isn't going to go much higher......

Perhaps a resurgence in Chemtrail posts?? or will it be flaming asteroids??.....Stay tuned!!

Craig:

Please point out exactly where I said there *is* an oil shortage.

i agree, great post. but now you've got me wondering. i thought aspirin (a salicylate) came from the bark of a tree. or do we now make "synthetic" aspirin from petroleum????

-- boop (leafyspurge@hotmail.com), January 27, 2000.

Boop:

Hmmm, I think it was willow bark if I recall correctly. But just to show you how full of useless information I am, here is what I found at the following site:

http://www.aspirin-foundation.com/chemist.htm

Aspirin is prepared by chemical synthesis from salicylic acid, by accetylation with acetic anhydride, using sulphuric acid as a catalyst.

Yup. I knew that. Couldn't have said it better myself. (BFG)

You know, rising oil prices has been shown in numerous urban growth studies to promote urban development and increase business in commonly depressed urban areas. It decreases suburban "brain-drain" as families choose not to live a driving distance away from work, and it has residual effects such as decreases in crime and improvements in small business economics.

Food for thought.

Here's some food for thought:

Even if there is no major Y2K problem in the oil industry, we are still facing serious problems in the future. The following link is for a Forbes article written in 1998 and is worth reading. It supports the idea that we are facing future oil shortages. Forbes Article

Cocks? I think that's only in Texas.
