Couple married at Mercy

January 05, 2000, ALISON LAURIO, Staff Writer

Many weddings are plagued by some kind of minor hitch, but a Council Bluffs groom is calling this one "the Y2K marriage," for more than one reason.

John Locke and Terry McGuire were married Friday in the chapel at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.

The bride was seated in a wheelchair in her hospital gown, with a portable intravenous unit - and her groom - by her side.

But her emergency hospitalization the night before their New Year's Eve wedding was not the only thing that went wrong, John said.

His paycheck, which was supposed to be directly deposited Friday, did not make it into his account. Then the power supply on his computer went out, and the two separate replacement units he purchased did not work, either.

And, there was a Y2K equipment problem with several IV pumps, so the hospital had to try three or four different ones before Terry's IV was working properly, John said.

In spite of it all, both said they were glad they went ahead and got married on their chosen day of Dec. 31, which is John's birthday.
