Zimbabwe's Mugabe wins Z$100,000 in bank draw

WIRE:01/27/2000 08:24:00 ET

HARARE, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has won Z$100,000 (U.S.$2,639) in a promotional draw carried out by a local bank for its clients, the institution said on Thursday.
Zimbabwe Banking Corporation, part of the Financial Holdings Limited (FINH.ZI) stable, said Mugabe's name had been drawn on Wednesday out of thousands of qualifying account holders who participated in the promotion.

"Master of Ceremonies Fallot Chawawa could hardly believe his eyes when the ticket drawn for the Z$100,000 prize was handed to him and he saw His Excellency R. G. Mugabe written on it," the bank said in a statement.

Mugabe, 75, and in power since independence from Britain in 1980, awarded himself and his cabinet salary hikes of up to 200 percent last year, but denies charges that government mismanagement has plunged the economy into its worst crisis in decades.

($1 - 37.9 Zimbabwe dollars)

(I think I found a way to pay for a 1.7 million dollar house that someone just bought in New York...)

Another one like this happened a few
years ago in the Phillipines. The head
of the commission to investigate fraud
in the lottery won the jackpot. Too
funny.

Nothing humorous in this from my perspective. (IMHO) How long before we see the same thing happening here in this country. Not too long from the way things are apparently happening...
