Caveman Tactic Lands Four in Jail Updated 11:49 AM ET January 24, 2000 NICOSIA (Reuters) - An alleged Greek custom of kidnapping prospective brides did not go down too well with police in Cyprus, who have four men in custody. Four ethnic Greeks from the Black Sea region were in detention after bundling a young woman into their car in a central street of the capital Nicosia. She was found unharmed later in the day.

The suspects came from a Greek community that has lived in the Caucasus region for centuries, but which began to disperse after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The woman, from the same region, spurned the advances of one of the suspects. But he would not take no for an answer, police said.

"We were told this is a custom from where they come from. Here it is kidnapping," a police spokesman told Reuters.
