20-year Lawrence Livermore Lab employee resigns LIVERMORE, Calif. (AP) -- A longtime employee of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory resigned Monday, saying his bosses retaliated against him for reporting safety violations. David Lappa, who worked at the lab for nearly 20 years, said he was suffering "an intolerable pattern of continued reprisal" since 1997, when he claimed the lab was trying to cover up safety problems in its plutonium facility.

Lappa served as a consultant to the Department of Energy's investigation into safety problems at the facility in 1997. He felt some of the safety rules had been willfully violated, but the investigating panel disagreed with some of his points and did not include his opinions in its final report.

After this disagreement, Lappa said he received negative comments about his job performance, was passed over for bonuses and promotions, and given a job assignment with no prospects for advancement.

A U.S. Department of Labor investigation agreed in 1998 that Lappa had been treated unfairly, and the University of California, Lappa's employer, did not appeal the decision. Lappa was awarded compensatory damages and a pay increase.

But Lappa's supporters say the negative treatment did not end there.

"They have made it clear at the laboratory that he is not wanted," said attorney Tom Carpenter, who is working on Lappa's case with the Government Accountability Project. "He has been retaliated against repeatedly and his career has come to an end."

Lappa filed a lawsuit against the lab and the university in September 1998, claiming continued retaliation. He said he didn't expect his resignation to affect the lawsuit.

"I did what I had to do for my well-being," Lappa said.

Lab spokeswoman Susan Houghton said she believed the trial would sort out the matter.

"Mr. Lappa views the situation very differently from the way we view it," Houghton said. "We are anxious for the trial to start so that we can prove that."

The suit is scheduled to go to court this spring.

Hey "guy", what are you doing up so late?

Here's a research question for you, Hokie:

How many companies are reporting profits simply based upon their profitable investments in the "Market". Is this a house-of-cards or what? I'd bet that if you don't know the answer immediately you can find out.

Re. Oil: think they don't want to import our debt for their black gold?

Hey, I was almost right wasn't I. Thanks for your previous...

Larry, that's a good question. I think the market holdings count as assets, not profits?

I understand losses are just smaller profits than hoped. For example, if you predict a 10mill profit one quarter, than only clear 6mill, you can declare a 4mill loss for that quarter, and get special tax breaks. just another smoking mirror to keep the sheoples in the pens.

Hokie...I was listening to mkt report last week and they commented on some company that had a very high profit margin due to their investments in the stock mkt. Can't remember which company it was. Kind of like the cat chasing its tail. When it comes down, get out of the way or you will get smashed flat!! Taz
