bird in tree

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

The bird I think is a red-shouldered hawk. The tree is a pignut hickory. Sigma 400 on a N70.

You are really starting to get too good at this stuff Larry! Great shot. I would have rather not seen the small branch in front of the Hawk, buy I'm really just looking for something to critique here. I've had the same problem with a few of my pictures too though.

I don't think my photography has improved, I'm just finding more photogenic birds. Generally when I see a hawk, I can't get close and there is no time to compose. So I end up with a whatever grabshot. But this bird landed in my front yard and allowed me some time to think about background and let me get fairly close. This was the best of about 15 frames before I took one step too close...

One step too close? Sounds like you were attacked. :)

Great detail on the hawk. The tree branch gives an interesting perspective, almost three dimensional. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it is definitely interesting.

Larry....Very well done. The exposure seems to be right on. I also like your use of depth here, the entire bird seems to be sharp and the background falls of nicely. I do think I would have liked this image better as a vertical but only you know the conditions under which it was captured.

Thanks for the post.

Larry, I'm also amazed at how close you got with the 400 (this even looks like a small hawk). It's a very nice photo. My one question is about the use of flash. It looks to me like you used fill flash (and I think that probably vastly improves the photo), but if I had to quibble I would say that there is one "hotspot" on the hawk's wing.

No fill flash, my N70 won't fire my SB27 anymore. I think the flash is ok as my wife's N60 will fire it.

Not only is your photographic skill good, your scanning skill is also fantastic!
