I am sorry that I can't post any "job description" for I don't have a written one, and if there is a verbal or mental one, it still hasn't been clearly expressed by the elders and congregation [although there have been several hints that each person has a different view of what my job should be].

But I do have a few questions that may get this post rolling . 1) Is the fact that there hasn't been much posted for job descriptions a sign that most of us work without a job description (other than the word of God)? I am currently working with the second church I have worked with and have not had a written job description yet [despite asking for one at both churches].

2) What do you suppose is the reason that some churches neglect and/or refuse to have a written job description (other than the Scriptures)?

3) Would a written job description help both the minister (especially the young, inexperienced ones) and the church be able to better see if he is doing his work, and thus prevent frustration from both the minister and the church?

4) Should a minister insist on having a written job description? And if so, how should he go about it?

Thank you for letting me be part of this forum. Malcam

I'm just talking off the top of my head here, but I think that a minister should have a written, or at least a verbalized, job description. If the tasks to be performed are not ironed out, it leads to abuse -- on both sides. Everyone should know what they are supposed to do and what is expected of them. If a congregation ever called me and didnt have one, one of our first tasks would be to hammer one out. I would insist on it. I don't know how you guys are, but a Baptist congregation having a pastor without a job description means that the pastor gets to do everything, and the congregation nothing. I can't buy that, so I would insist on one. If they dont like it, then I dont need to be there.

I do not know why people treat the church differently than they treat any other endeavor in life. No executive would take a job without clear guidelines. Granted, a minister is not an executive. But what, he doesnt need guidance? (And PLEASE, do not just say "THE BIBLE." I'm sorry, but that is like a non-answer. Let's get laser precise, ok?) We act like somehow "the church" is magically different and we can dispose of our native intelligence when we enter it. I think God gave us a brain and intelligence to use. We have to use this intelligence in our churches too. It makes things easier on us and our congregation. Lack of clear deliniation of tasks between the minister and the congregation will lead to abuse.
