Two claims against Mobil, including $100m class action

Two separate court actions - including a $100 million class action - are due to get under way against Mobil in Melbourne today over the fuel contamination crisis.

Solicitors Maurice Blackburn Cashman are expected to reveal details of the class action on behalf of operators in aircraft agriculture, air charter and flying training.

They will allege they have suffered significant financial losses during the month-long crisis.

Meanwhile, solicitors Slater and Gordon are due to lodge Supreme Court action on behalf of one member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).

AOPA spokesman Mike Hart said the action was partly intended to prompt Mobil to go to the negotiating table to improve its offer of $15 million in compensation.

"We're quite happy to chuck this (court action) in the bin if they will talk to us about compensation," he said.

But he said he was not optimistic Mobil would negotiate.

Some of the thousands of grounded light aircraft are expected to be back in the air today following approval of a test to check for the contaminated fuel.

A friend told me last night that a Jan. 8 Allegro(?) Airlines flight he was on from Boston to Antigua filled with smoke five minutes in to the flight. People panicked. Stewardess told passengers they had painted the engine just before takeoff and that was the problem. Pilot was unable to communicate because he couldn't speak English. Smoke cleared and they went on to Antigua....
