Digital backs for existing 35mm cameras

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I read somewhere that there is a company working on a digital back for traditional 35mm cameras. The advantage of this option is that I could utilize my existing arsenal of lenses and accessories and have the flexibility of changing from analog to digital and vise-vers

Yes this does sound good ... but ....
Your 50mm lens becomes the equivelent of about a 90mm telephoto. Your 35mm Wide angle becomes your normal lens... etc. It is extremely difficult to produce a CCD the size of a 35mm sensor - though Scitex (see the News Page on this website) has announced a 35mm 6.6 megapixel CCD. I, however, doubt it will find it's way to mainstream, prosumer devices before the tribulation.

Check-out http://www.siliconfilm.com

They aren't 'quite there' yet, but pointed in the right direction...

Thanks everyone for your feedback. The prospect of a 6.6 mega-pixel CCD is very promising but at what cost? It certainly overwelms the 1.3 mega-pixel CCD that will be offered by SiliconFilm this year. Unfortunately SiliconFilm currently isn't offering a model to work with Nikon F4's.Thanks again.

SiliconFilm have been pointing in the right direction for years. Perhaps this will be the one in which they actually have something to sell, but don't count on it.
