OT: I picked up an interesting book yesterday - it's a chronicle of the history of the OIL industry!

I was in a consignment shop close to my home yesterday, when I was looking at the books. Most books in this place sell cheap - $2 or less for paperbacks or hardcover. While I was looking, I found a book called "The Prize" by Daniel Yergin. It's a book on the history of the OIL industry. It was a measly buck, so I bought it. It was in paperback, about 800 pages. A lucky find indeed! What a coincidence that I find this book as the talk on this forum as the subject of oil and Y2K heats up!

Now I know that oil has been a HUGE topic here lately - for doomers and pollies alike. This might prove to be interesting reading about now! If you have read it in the past, please tell me what you think of it. I've read about 44 pages so far, and I find it very interesting.

It was published in 1991 by Simon and Schuster. It may have been updated since then.

According to the book, Yergin is also the author and coauthor of the following books: "Shattered Peace: Origins of the Cold War", "Energy Future" and "Global Insecurity".

I hope that you can find it in your local library, and that both pollies and doomers alike appreciate my tip.

Also a good PBS video series on the book (at my library for free) and Books on Tape has an audio version one can rent- great for driving, working out, that kinda thing...

Considered the definative history of the oil biz....

Only it doesn't mention the biggest secret of all - the oil for gold deals :o)

Thanks for the input Downstreamer! I didn't know about the PBS series.

Andy - LOL! I have barely begun the book, but I'm sure they would not mention that! Thanks anyway :^)!

I am a lover of history books - and books in general for that matter. I have a personal library of about 300 books. I used to have over 1000. Sold alot of my books at a garage sale I had last year.

I love to read, anyway. And I had this feeling that there were other history lovers like myself on this forum. This book is really good so far, and I thought that others may have wanted to be aware of it.

Thank you!

One of the best books ever written on the industry bar none. Another for you petro history buffs would be the Oil Follies of 1970-1980 by Bob Sherril for a look inside some juicy opec history.

I am with Dstreamer in recommending you get the PBS video of the prize as well. It is extremely well done.
