Jacksonville Florida area already in gas crises. My neighbor just emailed me this.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

From my neighbor: "I drove up to Jacksonville today to meet with an online friend from California who was visiting her brother in Jax. Thought I'd get gas on the way home...almost didn't make it. Gas stations had long lines, backed up to the street AND when I finally found one that didn't have as long of lines, we were all trying to pump gas and found that the station was CLOSED -- no gas. Other stations (ones with the long lines) only had premium. It was freaky...like the oil crisis in the 70's...I finally got some gas (as I was about on empty) in a little place in the forest and it was $l.32 for the cheapest they had. One of the stations in Jax had regular for $1.43 and just small lines...so I went on by thinking I'd find something down the road but didn't. You should have heard the people griping. Can't wait...the best is yet to come.

You sound like your hoping something bad will happen?

-- cork (corcorab@hotmail.com), January 21, 2000.

No, Cork...that was my neighbor saying that. It surprised me as she prepared a little for y2k but was not what I would call a doomer. But her husband is in total denial with a big chunk in the mkt. Everything they have is in the mkt. She is real nervous about inflation and bubble.com

-- Taz (Tassi123@aol.com), January 21, 2000.

Taz, you are lying, and you know it!! I live right here, and there aren't any lines, anywhere! Come back!!!!

-- Princess Flicker Spirit (seeking@answers.com), January 21, 2000.

Diesel is $1.48 at the Pilot truck stop in Ocala. I think the worst is yet to come.

-- Earl (earl.shuholm@worldnet.att.net), January 21, 2000.

Just a minute Princess whoever the hell you are. I do not lie! And anyone who has been on this forum for any length of time will tell you that I call 'em as I see 'em. I mearly put the email on the forum. I have no idea what is happening in J'ville and really don't give a flying you know what. On the other hand, while this neighbor is not a bosum buddy of mine, I have no idea why she would send me an email like she did, saying what she did, if this is not what she experienced. She is not a doomer and has never heard of TB2000..... Just as I have never heard of you!!!!!!! Perhaps she was on another street from where you were working!

Flick this!!

-- Porky (Porky@in.cellblockD), January 21, 2000.

Taz, you got an "in" with the SYSOPS, interesting to note another rebuttal I posted, just vanished.Anyway, I am smack dab in Jacksonville, and there are no gas lines anywhere. Folks too stupid to fill up before price goes up. I would like to meet you, since we are within commuting distance. Maybe we could meet for lunch? We could compare t.p. roll count?

-- Princess Flicker Spirit (seeking@answers.com), January 21, 2000.

Thanks TAZ. I have lurked here for over a year and know you do not lie. Please keep us informned. Mt.Pleasant Michigan gas is $1.49 for reg. No lines yet but the price jump stunned us.

Keep on keeping on, JOY

-- JOY (Tryon1ja@cmich.edu), January 21, 2000.

princess Flicker Spirit, You called Taz a liar and now you want to meet for lunch and compare TP?

LOL

Ya got gall, gal!

Thanks for the post Taz.

-- Dee (T1Colt556@aol.com), January 21, 2000.

Yesterday in Carbondale, IL gas was $1.26 and $1.31. On my way in to work tonight the sign at the "quick stop" station that I always pass said $1.36 and $1.43. Sorry, can't remember the exact name of the place). Anyway, my mouth fell open when I saw the price jump that much overnight!

-- JT80CoG (wm61@siu.edu), January 21, 2000.

Yes Sir Postman, If I make a statement, I base it on my info-information. I have been wrong, on more than than one occasion. But I am not wrong on the gas lines in Jacksonville. Sometimes, other people get other information, other prospectives, Hell, it's too complicated for words. We all, at sometime, get wound around the axle because of mis-information. And we have to get the gumption to say "Hey, I see it differently, explain to me, how you are seeing it". So, I ask Taz (who has t.p. out the wazoo) to lunch, what's your beef?

-- Princess Flicker Spirit (seeking@answers.com), January 21, 2000.

I smell a Lady @work.now.

-- lisa (lisa@work.now), January 21, 2000.

Lisa, no Lady here, other than in your nostrils. You will not kill this thread with hints of L.L., I am not she/it.

-- Princess Flicker Spirit (seeking@answers.com), January 21, 2000.

Sorry, but Taz is misinformed. I live 30 miles from Jax, the only thing on the news is about the big game coming up Sunday. Go Jaguars !!!!!!!

-- Stanley Lucas (StanleyLucas@WebTv.net), January 21, 2000.

Mt. Pleasant? I lived there for about 25 years up until last year when we moved to the "west coast" (my wife teaches here at the HS she attended growing up).

Mt. Idy grew too much, too fast, wrong direction IMO.

I would like to believe, you are the same. Taz, please let me have belief, in one final thing, that you are a true human, posting your "Life's Book". If we can meet for lunch, eye to eye, person to person, then, I will post it here, for all humans to see. Taz, your come back.....

-- Princess Flicker Spirit (seeking@answers.com), January 21, 2000.

Yawn....we paid $1.69, 1.89, 1.99 for gas this summer in california...

-- Princess Flicker Spirit (seeking@answers.com), January 22, 2000.

Princess and Taz: Maybe your both right. The full extent of the metropolitan Jacksonville area must be huge.

But, Taz's friend didn't say her gas problems were in Jacksonville. SHE SAID THEY OCCURED ON HER WAY HOME FROM JACKSONVILLE.

Taz, where does your friend live? I realize that you titled your post 'Jacksonville Florida has....' But perhaps that was imprecise. Perhaps the problems were to the south of the Jacksonville area.

Princess: Do you live in the north Jacksonville area? Is the greater Jacksonville metropolitan area huge?

Anyone: Perhaps there are multiple fuel distributers to the region? Could some wholesalers have 'dried up' while others are relatively unaffected?

-- tim phronesia (phronesia@webtv.net), January 22, 2000.

Tim, I will address you, since Taz has not addressed me. There are no "F" lines at any gas station! There are those who might take affront, with my human language. They ain't no fucking lines at the gas pumps! How can I say those words, because they are only, human induced words. Folks, there are no lines.. at any gas station, that I have seen..

-- Princess Flicker Spirit (seeking@answers.com), January 22, 2000.

Princess:

I think we all understand that. There are no lines at gas stations that you have seen.

My question is: Do you think that perhaps Taz's friend went to gas stations that you haven't seen, in an area where you haven't recently been?

I myself wouldn't necessarily know. But do you yourself think that it might be different at different places? Let me know.

-- tim phronesia (phronesia@webtv.net), January 22, 2000.

Jacksonville, Florida, has one of the largest geographical metro areas in the United States.

Mushroom, who doesn't live there, but collects odd facts.

-- mushroom (mushroom_at_bs_too_long@yahoo.com), January 22, 2000.

Thanks for taking the time to post this Taz.

Tomorrow I will call my friend in Live Oak and get a gas quote for everyone, along w/name of station and location. I have also e-mailed family in Jax for their input.

For anyone who may be new to this forum, I have met Taz in person. She is a wonderful person, straightforward, refreshing, and I'm honored to have her as a friend. She does not lie.

For anyone who is confused by threads like this one, or lack of television/newspaper coverage or contradictory coverage between competing networks, remember attacking the messenger does not validify or refute the facts. It only distracts from the issue at hand. All adults old enough to vote have seen these ad hominem attacks used during election years, usually by the losing side.

I would be more receptive to the disputer if she would provide details, i.e., approx. geographic location w/in Jacksonville, proximity to highway, time of day, volume of traffic, names of gas stations, etc. For example, although I live in the Atlanta area, for those of you unfamiliar with it, it's huge, sprawling for miles. I could look out my window and give you an accurate report that is meaningless to someone who has found a problem downtown, or at Hartsfield, etc. Jacksonville is also spread out. More importantly, as one leaves the city limits and metro area, towns are spread out further and gas stations become less frequent. They also become more expensive in the best of times.

Jax is home to a large Naval Air Station. It is also an important port and supply line to the southern U.S. This is why the Marine Corps Logistics Support Base Atlantic moved Hdqtrs. Battalion south from Philadelphia to Albany, Ga. in the mid-1970s. They closed Philly, birthplace of the Marine Corps, and relocated to base in Albany, Ga. around 1975-76. Albany had also been home to Turner Air Field in 40s - early 60s, and a large Naval Air Station that closed around 1973-74, which is now the site of Miller Brewery. The Marine Base has been there since at least the early 60s. Albany is surrounded by farms and very small towns. During the Gulf War, supplies were moved by rail and trucks to Jacksonville for shipment to the middle east. This very important base is the Marine Corps logistics base serving the eastern half of the US. The west coast division is in Barstow, Ca., because of proximity to San Diego.

As for the price of gas Taz' neighbor e-mailed her, that sounds about right to me offhand, because Fl gas is usually about .15c higher than what I pay in Ga because of the taxes.

There are many new URLs out there with titles like cheap-gas.com, or gas-price.com for people to compare prices nationwide. Michael Hyatt has some interesting threads on this, as does FreeRepublic.com (which is full of people debating the topic from political viewpoints as well.) And finally, I found some very interesting first person accts on this topic on truck.net.bbs and several other independent owner operator truck forums. Only it wasn't debated at all. There was no question that the increase in fuel cost is devastating to the industry, the independent owner operators, etc. They are having to absorb the costs out of pocket, yet wonder why Fed-X can tack on a surcharge, or the airlines could pass it on as well. One page had a survey showing how an extra .05 increase in fuel costs an ind. owner-op over $13,000 annually. It is already hard for the industry to keep drivers. It will be a significant problem if the money is diminishing at that rate. Anyone but me remember the truckers strikes in the 70s? Remember when shipping goes up, those costs are passed down to consumers. The price of everything goes up, except your paycheck. It stays the same, it just has diminished purchasing power. If interests rates go up the cost of repaying debt also increases.

Anyone who wishes to disagree and wait for an official press conferene from the White House forecasting anything but blue skies ahead for average Americans is free to do so at their own risk. Anyone wishing to provide forum with anecdotal evidence (& documented reports of course) that there might be trouble ahead is deeply and sincerely appreciated by me.

I have corresponded with Taz for many months and we have spoken by telephone. She has been the soul of wit and kindness and has never told me anything resembling an untruth. This is another character assassination by another troll--apparently, a friend of LL's.

Has nobody noticed the continued destruction of people one might consider leaders on this forum? Not only does it force the target into silence, it discourages many others from posting. The trolls could not close down this forum by complaining to MIT so they are back to their old tactics--toppling the leaders.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), January 22, 2000.

Gas in the North Country is 1.45 for economy and 1.58 for hightest. Its been this way since November.

What is the point on gas prices? Might be a little high, but nothing to get excited about. Everybody made money of Y2k, now the oil boys want their cut.

-- cork (corcorab@hotmail.com), January 22, 2000.

Princess...you may be very sincere in your beliefs... and in your observations. I don't know. But I am not a liar and I do not have lunch with anyone who would call me such. You stay on your end of the forest and I will stay on mine. Taz

-- Taz (Tassi123@aol.com), January 22, 2000.

There are no gas lines here in CT. But after filling up yesterday I know why. It is so f...ing cold and windy that if you stand outside to fill up you will turn into an icicle before you tank is full.

I wouldn't complain in the Deep South. Petrol (gas) up in this dipshit Deep Freeze is 79.1 cents per litre...and we export the stuff!

Dear Princess Diana/Hysterical Personality Type,

Is Taz a real person ?? You bet !!!Spent 10 days with her down in the Caribbean last Autumn.Shared an apartment that KOS would have loved as liquid mud came out of the shower head.Had a whale of a time looking at goats & the local markets.Taz introduced me to Johnny Cake & explained to this puzzled Brit why everybody on the Forum was thinking about buying beans & wheat. Some of you may remember Taz posting about the canned butter we found.

As for wanting to meet for lunch after calling Taz a liar...whoever you are you must be one stupid woman whose brain has got addled by watching too many soaps.Pity some of that soap didn't reach your mouth.

-- Nearly a Kittian (griffen@globalnet.co.uk), January 22, 2000.

I got tired of reading this thread and quit in the middle - too much wasteful bickering.

Wanted topost that I saw gas lines in Mason, Ohio yesterday about 25 miles NE of Cincinnati. The lines were waiting for pumps to open at a gas station selling gas for 1.33/1.43/1.53 for 87/89/93 octane while nearby stations were selling same for 1.44/155/166. The lines were at a Citgo which is I think supplied by PetroVenezuela. Just speculating but maybe they are running out stocks prior to a temporary closure. Or maybe they just like selling 11cents below the market.

-- Bill P (porterwn@one.net), January 22, 2000.

taz:

I live and work near the baymeadows road exit of I-95 in Jaxsonville Florida.

I filled my car this past friday and my van on saturday, no lines.

I did not see any lines at the Texaco, Shell, or Chevron stations closest to I-95 on baymeadows road at lunchtime on friday.

I do not know where your neighbor stopped for gas, but I have not seen or heard of any problems getting gas.

By the way Duval county has an extra 7 cent/gallon tax on gas, so fill up in St. Johns county, or better yet, gas up in GA, the taxes in Georgia are lower.
