greenspun.com : LUSENET : Images of Photography : One Thread

Before posting in this forum, you must read Images of Photography: Introduction.

This thread ('Welcome') is the only one that allows words, unless I find it necessary to create any administration threads.

I have started the forum off with a single thread. To obey my own rules, I can't reply to it, or create another thread, until someone else does.

If the rules (or anything else) are not clear, please ask in this thread (or email me).

>>This is a family forum. Pornography isn't allowed. 'Glamour' and slightly titilating images are not allowed. Genitalia are not allowed (even through transluscent clothing). Sexually suggestive poses, even fully clothed, are not allowed.

OK since I'm about to buy a scanner, I have to ask. I shoot portraits and fashion of women largely. The pornography is obvious. The genetalia is obvious (including nipples through shirts I'm sure), and the sexually suggestive shots are probably obvious for the most part. I'm a little worried about what migt be deemed slightly titilating images, due to the nature of my work (beautiful women can sometimes just be standing there and it is titilating). I'm not debating anything here Alan; I wouldn't want to see this site degrade and I think your rules are fair. So here is my question:

Using my own judgement, If I deem a fashion photo acceptable according to your rules, and I decide to post, but it turns out my judgement, being so close to my photo/subject, is, well, just outside the realm of acceptability, will you have the ability to simply remove it from the forum? I hope so.

Otherwise, I fear I might never post because I wouldn't want to be the one to get your great idea Nanny-ized....

Thanks finally for a forum without words Alan.

Yes, sure, if that happens I will simply remove your post.

Hi, I have another question. On the info page, you say this is for photographs and images manipulated in traditional darkroom ways, and we should find for ourselves where the boundary lies. So does this mean digitally manipulated images will not be deleted? I have a few i n which they were modified wholly in photoshop, but with techniques that could, at least theoretically, all be done in the darkroom. I'm not asking whether this is a photograph, I'm just wondering if this forum is open to borderline digital images (or they could be darkroom-manipulated images, either way), or will they be deleted? Thanks alot, this seems like a really interesting idea for a forum. hope it works out!

I deliberately left that rule rather vague. No, I won't delete borderline images (because I don't know where the borderline really is). I will delete images that are obviously computer-generated or hand-painted, i.e. that have never seen a camera in their lives. I'm not really very fussed about this rule. The conversation is more important than an individual image. Does the image represent 'a visual truth'? Why not post something, and see what happens.

Great idea! If I feel my work is worthy I may respond to some of the questions.

Here's where MY question comes in... After reviewing those Q&A already posted, I'm not sure if YOUR intent is that the Answer in some way be...

1. A reciprocal view (eg. someone looking into a pond, the answer being (perhaps)a Reflection; or... some one looking through a peep hole, the answer perhaps being a view from within a room HAVING a peep hole). --or-- 2. A theme (eg. A picture of twins, the answer is other sets of twins; a picture of a stream, the answer is other pictures of streams)... --or-- Does it matter?

The reply will be your response to the photos already in the thread. Prologue and fugue. Theme and variations. Question and response. When you are in a spoken conversation, you pick up on threads laid down by others. The conversation inevitably drifts from the original topic. At some stage, we might call it a new conversation.

In brief, my answer is 'I don't know'.

Or perhaps a better brief answer is: 'It's up to you'.

Alan, your introduction page is missing on the homestead servers. Could you please repost it?

Thanks.
