Big Laurel Falls

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

First of all, hello, folks; I've been lurking on here for a little while and figured it was about time to post. I'm a serious amateur in Atlanta, and I've rather immersed myself in photography over the last couple of years. I welcome any comments good or bad, as long as they're honest.

This is Big Laurel Falls, located in the Nantahala River basin in the Nantahala National Forest, NC. Technical details: Minolta X-570 with 24-50mm f/4 @ 35mm, f/8 @ 1/2 sec., Tiffen 812 & polarizer, Kodak E100VS.

I do apologize for the image size; I will try to trim any future posts.

Well, that certainly got things off on the right foot, now didn't it.

This is a good, but not great, image. The composition is good - framed nicely in the foreground and on the sides. My nitpicks - I think it is underexposed (? about a stop), I might have preferred slightly more background foliage, and I'm a little distracted by the bright areas in the background (probably sun coming through that you had no control over).

I agree. I also think that this image is underexposed (at least 1/2 stop). The image also seems to lack imagination. Perhaps you might want to change to a vertical format or a tighter shot. Whatever the case, you had fun shooting it so that is really all that matters.

A very nice shot and exposure looks dead-on on my mac gamma setting. Looks a little dark when I switch to pc uncorrected gamma. I wish my first posting here was as nice. The response to my first posting was that it didn't rise to the standards of this forum but they let it stay anyway. My face was red for 3 days. Nice going. Mike

Hahaha, Mike, you've got a nice sense of humor. [Never again a red face, perhaps feel pity for anybody who would react to posted images with superficiality.]

Christian, thumbs up for your picture. When I look at it, I can just feel and smell the moist air and the soil and the leaves. It *is* an exceptional picture - you've captured the atmosphere... I'm looking forward to your next image.

The "underexposure" really depends on gamma correction. [On my PC, the image is OK.]
