How can I get hi-rez scans of movie frames WITHOUT cutting film?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Does anybody make a film scanner that DOESN'T require mounting or cutting film to a given length? I want to make quality digital images from selected frames of motion picture film: 35mm, 16mm, and 8/sup8. Olympus' little ES-10 is great (I made little film carriers for the small gauges of film). Amazingly, it appears to be the only film scanner made with a transverse slot across the top, which opens up lots of possibilities. But the quality is just good. If somebody made a film scanner designed like a tiny version of a flatbed with 2400 plus resolution, that would be ideal!
