OT..Strange Object in the sky over Indiana

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

A number of Newspapers are reporting an enormous unusual object in the sky over southern Indiana last night. 300 feet long, 20 feet high, shaped like a triangle or arrow head with glowing reddish orange lights on the back and bottom. It glided along at about 500 feet elevation for over several miles and was seen by a large number of people including local police and highway patrol officers. It vanished after about 30 minutes. It seems to be very similar to what was seen in Arizona near Phoenix last year. Anyone on the forum in Indiana witness this incident?

Don, 1) Do you have a link? 2) The National (CBC Canadian News) reported last night a similar object was spotted by many people in the North West Teritories. I'll look for a link right now . . .

NE Indiana. What time was this supposed to have been? Out doing chores at 4 a.m., but didn't see anything at that time.

-- justme (justme@myhouse.com), January 19, 2000.

I don't have a link but it was reported in the San Francisco Paper and on the front page of the Greenville New Piedmont, Greenville, SC. They picked it off the National wire services last night.

There was also a comet or meteor big deal in Alaska last night.

Fire in the Sky

This is the only link I can find. Last night on TeeVee it sounded like a mystery today link states that it was a meteorite, end of story. Sure didn't sound like a meteorite when the locals (sorry, it was the Yukon, not North West Territories) described it's actions in the sky but, as they say, "Paranoia will destroy ya!"

Don,

Two weeks ago the same kind of huge craft was seen over southeast Illinois near Dupo and several other small towns. The counties mentioned in the reports are just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, MO. The police and several others saw the thing overhead about 4 a.m. Scott Air Force Base is close by, but according to the interview with two of the officers on Art Bell, the nothing had shown up on base radar... The officers did not know each other, but gave identical accounts of what they saw. I live about fifty miles from where these sightings took place and am watching for any strange sightings! I also saw some mention of the sightings in an area newspaper the other day.

Don,

Uhhh, I meant southwest Illinois.

JT80CoG:

Don't worry. I have known a number of students from SIU. They often were unaware of where they were :o).

Best wishes,,,

Sounds very similar to the ones reported over the last few years in Britain. Large triangular...

-- Sheri (wncy2k@nccn.net), January 19, 2000.

I think our newspaper may have gotten this story wrong. The object was seen in Southern Illinois, not Indiana. Whatever it was, it certainly is unusual and was a very real event. The Los Angles Times gives a good report.

I wonder if the one in Alaska could be connected to the missle test the Feds were doing for their star wars project wasn't that one day this week?

HMMM:

Have you ever seen a B-2. Really wierd. We live 50 miles from their lair. Very quiet. Not like the B-52's that ran a fake bombing raid on our house. They shook the world. Just a thought.

Best wishes,,,,

"Large triangular or arrowhead shaped"

Most likely the USAF TR-3 Tactical Reconnaissance NUCLEAR Powered Platform....

We had those flying over here. Stealth aircraft. Get a grip!

Just what we need! A "Flying Chernobyl" designed and built by the cheapest bidder.

-- (JBHager@webtv.net), January 19, 2000.

Yeah but Polly, by all accounts this thing was moving very slowly, which I would assume a stealth plane can't do....

-- Dzog (dzog@plasticine.com), January 19, 2000.

To All,

McDonnell Douglass, St. Louis, air show over the Mississippi near the Arch each July. You get to see Stealth, Harrier, F-16s, helicopters, etc, etc. Great spectacle.

According to all reports, the triangle-shaped UFOs are 1) silent, 2) huge, as in 70-80 feet long, 3) are seen at low altitude, 4) are capable of moving slowly through the air,i.e., drift along. I remember hearing someone say that the craft sort of looked like the Millennium Falcon from Star Trek. Not like a Stealth fighter or bomber or a meteor or a weather balloon or swamp gas.

-- JT80CoG (wm61@siu.edu), January 19, 2000.

"the Millennium Falcon from Star Trek." -- JT80CoG (wm61@siu.edu), January 19, 2000.

That was Star Wars. Han Solo's ship.

-- Postman (ringstwice@lw.ays), January 19, 2000.

Star Wars, Star Trek... trivial details... as JT80CoG stated, this is no conventional aircraft and reports have been made by law enforcement and commercial airline pilots.

It's either a "new" system or a new visitor.

The Alaska/Yukon exploding meteor occurred around 9:00 am (Local Time) on 1/18/00. The anti-missile test in CA was about 12 hours later. No direct connection...but there are plenty of other connections to choose from.

-- gpgnome (gpg@bluemarble.net), January 19, 2000.

There's nothing new about aircraft being able to fly slowly.......Harrier jets can literally sit still in mid-air and hover.

Remember, whatever the mind can perceive our hands can build. I think HG Wells or George Orwell or some other freak said something like that.

Star Trek or Star Wars were works of fiction, but the imagery contained within has stuck in the minds of millions of people. Many of these people became engineers and perhaps this somewhat biases their designs of actual aircraft, should they be aeronautical engineers.

Personally, I think UFO's are a bunch of hooey and what people saw was some kind of experimental military aircraft. The steath bomber was flown over the same part of the country for up to 7 years before it was unveiled to the public.

We ARE alone.

-- I AM (Trying@2B.Reasonable), January 20, 2000.

Dean Ing described a craft, using either off the shelf or NEARLY so components which would meet the description above, in 1992 or 93. Internally Ducted Fan propulsion system with the fans ducting over the lifting surfaces, etc makes the thing deucedly quiet, Helium inflation makes it NEARLY lighter than air but his design was NOT lighter than air. Etc. etc. etc.

twas a hologram folks.First they spray with their comtrails then after dark they do the hologram. Me thinks they are setting us up. If you had listened to Genesis communications last night and the Intellegence report from the Militia in Michigan you would have the whole story.

Don't beleive everything you see........

-- jules (jules@fridgid.net), January 20, 2000.

Don't believe what you see, sheople. Investigate Project Blue Beam. They are doing the hokey pokey with your head.

-- aware and enlightened (dp@iquest.net), January 20, 2000.

Just a quick comment. If one checks the stats on sightings over North Amr. over the last 30 years. Its interesting to see that Montana and Alberta have very few sightings. May its because this is were the USAF tests their weapons and they tell us whats going on in a round-about-way so we don't panic. Get a grip people.

My dear "I Am " .... Seeing is believing ! Even if you don't know what you are seeing . In 1947 , while home on leave from the Navy , I went to visit my father at work in a 3 story , former boy's school . He needed a tool from the station wagon . But, as we were on the top floor and he had recently had a heart attack , I volunteered to get it . As I was approaching the car , the town fire whistle blew five short blasts , indicating their was a fire in distric 5, Ridgebury , which was less than a mile directly north . As my uncle was fire chief and I had served in the volunteer fire dept. , I looked north to locate the fire by the smoke column . It was a beautiful June day , about five minutes to twelve , and NOT A CLOUD IN THE SKY ! I quickly spoted the column of smoke comimg from a farm just behind a low ridge . I followed the column of smoke to the top ( NO WIND ) , to try to judge how long the fire had been going , with thoughts of jumping in the car and joining the fire trucks , which I could hear about a mile away . When I looked at the top of the column , I noticed a silver , disk-shaped object about 500 feet higher (about 1000 feet ) and slightly to the right . It made NO noise ; it did NOT rise or fall ; it merely hovered motionless AND emitted NO exaust ( smoke ) . After staring at it for about thirty seconds , I called to my father to come down . As he was on the third floor , it must have taken another 30 seconds for him to get to the doorway . When he asked "What do you want ?" , I was still watching the disk , when it went from zero speed to hundreds of miles per hour , STRAIGHT UP , NO NOISE , NO EXAUST , till it was lost from view at 7-9 thousand feet. It appeared to be fifty to sixty feet in diameter , about fifteen feet thick at the middle of the "saucer-on-saucer" configuration , and no visible protrusions fron it's shinny surface . My dad asked what I was staring at , and I had to reply I really didn't know ; and I didn't , as I was nineteen , didn't read the papers ( i.e. never heard of a " flying saucer " ) and mainly interested in chasing skirts , as navy men will do ! I had been in the civil air patrol , flown and was well versed in all types of aircraft of the day . The only object that could hover was the "auto-gyro" that colonel Conlley flew and landed many times within a few miles of my home , and it made an awfull racket ! Often wondered if those "people" in the strange disk just " stirred our ant nest " ( lit the fire ) just to watch the reaction of the 'bugs" below . All I do know , is , that what ever was in that " object ' , it was not human , as a human body could not withstand the number of "G's" that occured when that "ship" went from zero to 800-1000 MPH in as fast as you can snap your fingers twice . Go figure ! Eagle

-- Hal Walker (e999eagle@freewwweb.com), January 20, 2000.

Just so you know, anyone who says the 'triangle-shaped' ufo looked like the 'Millennium Falcon from Star Trek' [Star Wars, actually] doesn't know what Han Solo's ship looks like.

The 'Millennium Falcon' was circular in shape. Not a sphere, but round.

I suppose one could have been thinking of a 'Romulan Bird-of-Prey style instead? Such as the one Kirk captured and returned to Earth with in the movies. They are more triangular in shape than Han Solo's ship.

For all you that don't believe in UFO"S let me tell you my story. I am 78 years old and when I was 12 my parents and sister went on a picnic in the foothills. We were there for just a short time when a strange airplane flew overhead. Dad and I looked over the brow of the hill to see it because it looked like it landed. We saw it come straight down into the draw. It was acylinder type shape with a ramp that came down. 3 people came out of it and we could see them very clear. We were homeplate to centerfield fence away. They hadlong arms and large heads but other than that looked like anybody. We watched them for a hour take dirt and creek samples and they got in and left. When they rose they turned fast at 90 degrees and disapeared quite fast. We didn't dare say anything because our community looked at things like that as loony. But I look back now and see what people say and think about these things and I know myself that it is for real.

-- Mike Weiss (Mr.andMrs.@aol.com), January 20, 2000.

A "large number of people" watched this thing for 30 minutes and no one managed to get a photo or any video of it?

Too bad.

Looks like another one for the "insufficient evidence to make a determination of origin" file.

This "Thing" has been seen in various places for about ten years now. Being the first sightings were out in the Edwards AFB, Mojave, CA and Palmdale, CA area, it's pretty high odds that this is a unique mil.org air vehicle. Early sightings noted that a man out jogging before dawn was able to keep up with one quite some time.

Edwards AFB speaks for itself, always something funny flying around there. Mojave is home to Scaled Composites, makers of many unique and unorthodox aircraft, with much recent mil.org involvement. There are also many other interesting activites occurring at the Mojave Airport, with lots of different tenants there all the time.

Palmdale is home a plant for every major US aircraft company; Northrop-Grumman, Boeing (Rockwell plant) and Lockheed Martin's relocated Skunk Works. Something "strange and wonderful" is always cooking at Palmdale or one of the three company's nearby private airfields. Just don't try to go visit, they are very unhospitable to curious strangers.

Boys and Girls, the law enforcement officers from the Dupo and Millstadt, IL area and those other small towns SAW the huge craft in the sky overhead at low altitude. I repeat, they SAW it. Several officers, in locations miles apart. In the Art Bell interview, one officer overheard others talking on the police radio about what they were seeing, so he drove out of town so as to get away from street lights, etc. Looked around for a few minutes and figured the others must have seen a plane or something, turned around and whoooaaaa, there it was. Heard on local radio this a.m. that these guys are getting a lot of media attention re this sighting.
