Shopping for Scanner

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am shopping for a desktop scanner for the production of portfolio prints, promos, and images for my website. Image size for the prints will likely by 6"x9" and 9x9", but I wouldn't mind producing some 11x14's for display. I have many 6x6 images to scan, and I don't want to spend over 2k. I have narrowed my search to a few models: *Minolta Dimage Multi (pros: multi-format, decent resolution and dmax; cons: possible Newton Rings); *Linocolor Saphir Ultra 2 (pros: software, 14 bits/channel, flatbed for flat art as well; cons: software intimidates some users, lower res on 35mm, hardware failed (made by Umax?), company may be getting out of scanner business (lack of support) *Epson Perfection 1200 Photo or Expression 1600 (read a few posts from satisfied owners, but I can't find any colleagues using these models, and the Epson web site does not show the transparency adaptors; pros: USB interface) One colleague suggested that I buy a flatbed for film larger than 35mm (and flat art), and then buy a 35mm-only scanner, such as the Nikon or Minolta Elite. I likely downside to that would be the time to learn the software for two machines. I have read some good info on this site, but I would appreciate any feedback on my perceptions as well as your personal experiences.

Well two scanners is probably the best answer, I would look at the "Expression 800 Professional" since you get the trans adapter for large negs and it comes with Monaco EZ color and Silverfast, great software. Then check out the LS-2000 Nikon, the prices just came down a little on both items so you could probably squeak in about 2k and have a great setup. They are both SCSI but its a great way to go. SCSI is easy to setup unless you get boatloads of old devices on the bus.
