What are the standard sizes for digital camera lens? What size of filter would I need for a specific camera? Thank you

It's anybody's guess. We need to know what model camera you have. The size you need is determined by the size of the filter mount on your particular camera. These range from a large of 52mm all the way down to 46 or even 43 millimeters. Also - make sure your camera has a filter mount. Consider going down to your local camera store - show them your camera and let them help you. Generally these folks are really helpful.

Most digital cameras have smaller than standard thread sizes compared to 35mm cameras. I would consider anything under 36mm threads to be non-standard. Those cameras generally have a hard time finding filters except for the ones that are offered by the camera manufacturer (usually at an inflated price). You can look first at the video or CamCorder counter because many of them have smaller lens threads as well and their filters may work. This problem is part of the trend to try and make cameras as small as possible and, of course that just limits the flexibiltiy of the camera. Also, the smaller cameras have the added problem that when filters are added (either directly or with step-up rings) the filter may block either the flash or the viewfinder especially if they are placed close to the lens. The smaller the camera the more likely this is to happen. Cameras like the Sony line have much larger thread sizes and can use filters availalbe at any 35mm camera store. The cameras that I own have 52mm and 62mm threads and I have dozens of standard 35mm camera filters that I can interchange between them.
