Chuck, thanks for your help.

It occurs to me that after more than a day of sit-in at Pine Ridge these people may be getting hungry soon. I would assume you still have good access to water. I remember reading about roads being shut off. Is food being allowed through? These people are probably not in a position to purchase massive quantities of food for their volunteers, seeing as how they've apparently just been robbed, and the treasurer is the one with the checkbook.

Also... what kind of facilities are they in? Is it large enough to provide shelter for everyone who needs it? Are the sanitation facilities adequate? Is there any kitchen?

I'm thinking that there may be some long term storage food companies nearby that geared up for Y2K, and didn't end up selling as much as they expected to. These companies may be sitting on excess inventory, and thus hurting, too. Although there may be some of us also ready to part with some of our own food inventories for a good cause, logistically it's probably not practical to get it to Pine Ridge.

I'm going to call around to see if I can locate a company nearby which would accept credit card donations on behalf of the protesters at Pine Ridge, in order to bring in a pallate or more of food. For a few thousand dollars or less, we could provide a couple days food for these few hundred volunteers.

Please, don't take offense, if no food is needed. Please, let us know if there are any common dietary restrictions. Also, are there any medical issues? I understand there is a high incidence of diabetes among native americans. Are there volunteers who are putting their health at risk?

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), January 18, 2000.

I know that Martina said someone was allowed food in yesterday, but I'm sure any help or contributions of basic "siege survival supplies" would be appreciated. Do we have someone on site (outside) who could coordinate?

One other way to keep the information flowing is through the use of ham radio. If the are any ham operators in the area, jump to single side band and even with the low power of an mobile unit, you become world wide.

-- idunno (idunno@whoknows.com), January 18, 2000.

Our family friend, who is also a Lakota spiritual leader, left a message this morning that he was going to Pine Ridge (he lives in another town on the rez). He said he would call from there, or if he couldn't, would call again tonite when he returns home. If he calls anytime soon, I will ask him what the needs are, and if it is appropriate for outsiders to assist. If the hoop of the people has closed in support of those inside the Tribal Offices, I'm sure food and other supplies are getting in (wasn't there a message that martial law had collapsed due to lack of willing personnel?)

If the Treasurer and tribal council members are isolated in the casino, what is the current reason for continuing occupation? The news is so sketchy, it's hard to follow. It sounds as if the whole community is supporting the protesters against the corruption, but I'm still unclear as to what is actually going on now.

Still praying for justice and peace...

This is not going to be a fun post .... :-(

First, some background on sources of information that many have relied upon during this situation.

Two or three individuals, most notably Martina Lookinghorse, have provided Jane and I with most of the details about events transpiring in Pine Ridge. These individuals have in turn relied upon a few inside the building and in the Pine Ridge community.

These original sources have maintained that the FBI and other federal authorities laid seige to the Red Cloud Tribal Building in Pine Ridge.

Jon Dougherty of WND spent hours speaking to the 'real' leaders inside the building. After the conversation, Jon spoke to David Bresnanhan, also of WND, who just called me back.

Here is the real story.

The FBI had executed a search warrant on Oglala Sioux tribal financial records, part of the HUD scandal investigation, at the Tribal Housing Office. At 2pm on Sunday, members of the tribe occupied the Tribal Building to protect financial records located there when it was learned that other elements in the tribe (who have been discussed elsewhere on the original thread) were planning to destroy them.

The FBI seige was a cover-story concocted by a few as a means of gaining attention. The threat of violence never was with the FBI, but with the other elements of the tribe.

Apparently the leadership was not told about the cover story, until today. Our sources were not told it was a cover story. We were not told, and neither were you.

The full and complete story by Jon Doughtery will appear on the WND website. I am not sure of when, but my guess is tommorrow.

There are political games being played by certain groups within the Sioux Nation and flamed by other factions outside of their tribes.

Bottom line - the story IS, has been, and remains real, the players were miscast for political leverage and gain.

Believe it or not, the real purpose of this thread series worked. We succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. We found the truth, got it broadcast, and more benefits are going to come to more people than you may realize. Awareness was raised. Many things have changed - for the better. And above all else, we proved to the world that people can work together to help one another in times of adversity and need. Something that will not be forgotten.

Many of the side issues remain unanswered ... the missing webpages from many sites, the weirdness of connections, etc ... perhaps they will be answered some day, perhaps not. Truth is, does it matter? Awareness is now there, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Some of you might think badly of me ... some of you will feel the opposite ... truth is, I am somewhere in the middle. Doing my best to help my brothers and sisters in trouble, no matter what their skin color, religion, social status, or other form of divisiveness.

I accurately relayed all that was given me. I never once opined. I did what I was asked to do - raise awareness. I never called for violence, rather did everything in my power to stop it from happening. That was my point for starting all of this. Enough people have suffered already, we don't need any more. It is past time to stop the stupidity.

This story is not going away, it is growing. Other Native American tribes ARE looking at themselves and the way they act and react. Many other Americans are doing the same.

One day, I pray that these kind of events become unnecessary, that peace and Love are the foundation of all existance. Until that day arrives, I shall continue to serve Creator as I am called to do.

The information reported here is NOT true. Yes, the Tribal offices are being occupied, but NO, the FBI is NOT taking over this situation. DO NOT listen to reports from NewsHawk--It is FALSE...They have greatly upset the people who ARE on scene--of a peaceful, nonviolent protest.

Mike Wicks responds to NewsHawks erroneous report;quote

"This is stupid, irresponsible, and dangerous trash to be sending out. It is nothing but lies. There is NO standoff! There is no heat from the FEDs! There is NO media blackout - and in fact a radio station set up and transmitted from inside the Tribal building! Get some facts before you spout this garbage. I don't know what game you people are playing by puting out this bunch of lies, but it needs to stop - RIGHT NOW! Pick up a phone and call the Tribal office. Speak to the people inside - ask to speak to the FBI - they are there AT THE REQUEST of the people inside. The FEDs are gathering evidence AT THE REQUEST of those inside." endquote

Possible Impact;

Martial Law was implemented - then taken down - looking for weapons to avoid a violent confrontation. When no weapons were found, it was discontinued. The citizens of Pine Ridge have been taking care of themselves and keeping their town peaceful. A triumph in anyone's book. :-)

-- hiding in plain (sight@edge of.nowhere), January 18, 2000.

River;

calmly, please go back and read my post above.

BTW: I sent a message to Newshawk, Inc about an hour ago when the truth started coming out. Asked them to talk to the leaders at Pine Ridge. Gave them the phone number to the back office where the leaders have been meeting.

This was always about seeking truth and helping to prevent a tragedy. It was never about trying to incite a riot. I have talked to several inside the building, and they do appreciate the efforts, the time spent, and the help that was being offered.

It was about being human - and showing humanity and compassion when brothers and sisters were in trouble.

If you wish to look down upon us for doing so, that is your right. Just please do not expect me to like it.

With great respect,

Rev. ThunderLight

-- hiding in plain (sight@edge of.nowhere), January 18, 2000.

Rev. Thunderlight, please forward my response:

You succeeded at crying wolf and have alienated the people and press who would have been there for you tomorrow. You shamed your tribe, which will be viewed by many now as dangerous self-serving manipulators. You did not act with honor. This error will haunt you, and I pity the innocent and honorable majority of your tribe who will carry your shame.

Your behavior has wounded your tribe. I pity you for having to live with this. What a hollow victory. I fear for you if your elders feel you have dishonored them.

I grieve the loss of what felt like a new friendship. How would todays results have been different if you had just left out the lie? I suspect the big difference in results will be tomorrow, when you cry wolf again and we dismiss it as a terrorist campaign.

-- Hokie (Hokie_@hotmail.com), January 18, 2000.

If these last posts are accurate - and I have no reason to doubt them - this is good news indeed. We do need to take note of the sources of false information for future reference. We once again see the necessity of having testimony confirmed by two or three witnesses.

Sysops, thanks for all the extra work you put into this series of threads. The awareness will keep some pressure on the PTB to pursue the complaints of the protestors.

IMHO it would be appropriate to notify our senators and congressmen that we want to see this investigation pursued, and if crimes have been committed, the guilty parties brought to justice.

Thanks, River, for posting additional sources of information. You have made my evening much more enjoyable.!!!

Blessings,

There is still great suffering and misery at Pine Ridge, and most other reserves as well. Traditional members of our tribes are routinely ignored and maltreated. Housing, education, food, utilities, and other basic necessities are routinely ignored.

But something has started at Pine Ridge. Great courage is being shown by several willing to risk all to improve themselves, their families, and their Nation - with honor, dignity, and peace.

You have all been a part of that. It is a badge of honor upon each of you.

Thank you for all of the time, energy, and effort. It did make a difference.

Rev. ThunderLight

-- hiding in plain (sight@edge of.nowhere), January 18, 2000.

Hokie, while I do not wish to attack anyone, it is important to remember that Martina Looking Horse does not speak for the Lakota, or even for the Looking Horse family. Rev. Michael posted the phone number to the tribal office early on, so anyone could call and verify the true state of things for themselves. Even others on the reservation were initially unclear about what was happening, and how it would all play out.

There are many factions within the Lakota, not surprising given their circumstances and painful history. That the people of Pine Ridge have conducted themselves with dignity and honor, maintaining the peace while seeking justice, supported by a peaceful community, is the memory that I will carry away from this occasion. Those with axes to grind may be forgiven if not forgotten, since the deep distrust of government intentions is well-justified after more than a century of abuses. On this occasion, it is clearly misplaced - for which we are all grateful.

To the sources who misinformed, so that they perhaps reconsider engaging in similar destructive behaviors.

"Forgiveness is the true spiritual path. Hold your head up high, knowing that you acted when called upon - with honor, dignity, and truth of your heart. "

I'm too busy e-mailing my apologies to the persons I misinformed. And what "forgiveness" were your sources of information implementing when they launched this little nuggett? What a crock.

I just got off the phone to those at the Tribal office. There was NO martial law, the FBI took the records as requested and left peacefully. ALL is calm, no problems. The occupation continues, PEACEFULLY.

I don't know what NewsHawk has been sending out, at this point, as I am not currently in contact. I do know that they forwarded the *original* story I was told a couple times, when it was already disproven and outdated, and I did not see any posings of the *updated* information I sent them.

However, I do know that the "FBI occupation" story was abandonned fairly early in the search for the truth, and that's not what has been put out by those of us trying to get at the truth since we started networking. I have been acting in good faith, trying to put out word from the people on site, and trying to correct misperceptions as the arise, to the best of my ability. I know that I feel like I was led astray a bit, but I can survive a bruise to my ego, and you can throw rocks at me for my trust, but the bottom line is that *We have all been willing to help, in whatever way we can.* We are Involved. By whatever way it evolved, we have accomplished many things!

Let us not lose track of the fact that we now have *solidarity* and have called attention to VITAL ISSUES of corruption and malfeasance on the Pine Ridge. Lets use this while we have it! Get that story out, about what's *really* going on, because the corruption is REAL.

Okay, so we're not going to have another Waco erupting. I say thank God for that. Yeah, horrible stuff sells papers, but what's happening here is positive, and we can still get the *REAL* story out. Let's keep the bad guys on the run, and put the power back in the hands of the People! Keep this one moving while we've got the momentum. The fact is that there IS a real story here, and one that needs to be told. It's a story of corruption, exploitation of the poorest of the poor, and a people denied the right to govern their own destiny. I, for one, think that's a helluva important story! Especially since this is stuff that goes on every day, and *we* have the power to say "Never again!" And if we can do it without the blood of martyrs, even more power to the cause!

Once upon a time, a woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat. No big, dramatic action. But look where that went. There's a lot to be said for peaceful resistance.

Let the circle be remade, and let us all work for truth, justice, and equality for all. Let all Peoples be Free of those who oppress them.

Keep the faith, and keep the focus! Jane

"You need not suggest there is no God. You must merely suggest it is time for lunch. By the time he has seen the real world, he will be convinced of it." (very inexact quote from C.S. Lewis and the Screwtape Letters, on how to induce loss of faith).

Hokie wrote:

> You succeeded at crying wolf...[snip]

How was wolf cried? What has changed to make this suddenly a non-issue?

Is the building no longer occupied? Is there not still a stand-off between those who want justice and those who are corrupt and want to keep it that way?

As far as I can see from what has been posted here, the situation is still ongoing. Considering how demonstrations have turned out in the past because of the corrupt and violent authorities on the reservation, things could still turn ugly.

Who will the council turn to for help in remove the protestors?

In the past, armed thugs were hired to patrol the reservation streets and to "silence" those who protested or exposed corruption. Many people have died and there has been no justice.

If there is a "Waco" element lacking, that is great. Another stand-off with the feds will almost definitely lead to bloodshed. But just because the stand-off doesn't involve U.S. authorities at this time, doesn't mean it won't later.

Attention still needs to be given to this situation. The press still needs to be informed. The corruption still needs to be investigated and eradicated.

I don't see how that's the jurisdiction of the FBI, but however it comes about, changes need to be made and they need to involve the people that will be most impacted if everything remains the same.

I don't understand why Hokie is so disappointed or why he feels the need to apologize to anyone. Did I miss a posting that said this situation ended peacefully?

And when it does, like we all hope it does, maybe public awareness will have increased because of this stand-off and a peaceful resolution. From there, maybe the public will pay more attention to the treaties that have been violated and the living conditions of too many Native Americans.

Maybe more people will even learn about Leonard Peltier and demand that Clinton give him executive clemency.

If not that, then we should ask the candidates running for president if they will do it if elected. Try to make it a campaign issue.

If all ends well, I won't be at all disappointed. I'll only be disappointed if that gives everyone an excuse to forget about what we've done and are still doing to the original inhabitants of this land until the next crisis comes along.

Yeah. I remember. They were given permission to have animals on thier property and then when they caused a guy with connections to get busted for drugs, the city suddenly had a problem with the animals. And I also remember that the northern Michigan militia did come to the Stitt's home and would have stayed if the Stitts hadn't declined the invitation, deciding instead to just give up and leave.

Hmmm. I'm thinking that being informed and taking preventative measures is a good thing and I think it's good that we were warned early enough about Y2K for billions of dollars to be spent on fixing the problem, which as most of you know, is not fully fixed and "glitches" are still be reported early. But thank God it wasn't the disaster it could have been since we were forewarned.

I also think that it's good that this situation is getting exposure. Maybe with the world watching, the council won't be able to simply off the people that started the protest and get away with it like has happened in the past.

Stitts, Y2K and Pine Ridge. All have turned out okay so far and none were hoaxes or BS. I guess some people aren't happy 'til they see some blood.

"Believe it or not, the real purpose of this thread series worked. We succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. "

My take is, the crooked books are acurate, and the peaceful protesters, but some faction took it upon themselves to lie about the FBI (who was peacefully cooperating with the request for an audit) just to manipulate the public and press.

It is only this faction with whom I raise issue. Rev. Thunderlight posted and e-mailed to me thanks from this faction for my help, so I felt entitled to also return my sentiment. Like it or not, I am afraid this faction's stunt, illegal apparently within the tribe? will harm the cause. It's none of my business I suppose, but hey when you give a shit sometimes it gets personal.

I think some folks here support the lies of the faction and perhaps believe it was a desperate attempt to help. So we have been I guess debating this?

Much good will come out of this - even if some dark clouds appear.

The corruption and theft will be dealt with. Much help has now arrived in Pine Ridge. From there it will spread. In the end, all will benefit.

So...what is happening at Pine Ridge Reservation is that a group of Sioux Native Americans have taken control of the offices there. This is in protest to mismanagement of money given to the reservation through various HUD programs. The questions then are who has mismanaged the money? Is the FBI involved at all? Another question is what does it take to draw attention to such a despicable theft of monetary resources? Why wasn't something done earlier? Who has been sitting on their duffs? I am proud of my Cherokee ancestory and I say, may the truth gently fall from the sky in crystal clear raindrops to wash away any trace of misery.

Humm. Shift Happens.

What are the lessons were in the process of learning?

That a group of people in an internet community, can make a difference, and can collectively arrive at the truth. Truth is often a process of discovery rather than the starting point. So few begin with it these days. Weve learned that lesson from the Y2K saga. (At least I hope weve learned it).

Were your hearts in the right place? Yes.

Is there still a problem? Yes.

Are we slightly bruised? Yes.

Are we still caring about our fellow humans? Your choice.

Will *some* learn that manipulation is bad karma? I hope so.

Will the rest of us learn that intentions to "do right" and help when called upon is good and recognizable karma? I hope so.

Hokie, you got most of it right except that the financial books are certain to be crooked. Too much money is missing.

First of all, NO rumours were started by anyone in Pine Ridge. Sorry but ALL the rumours were started on the internet. Protestors in the Tribal office have been trying to dispell these rumours. So consider the source, if you have heard false information from someone.

This isn't a case of Feds against Indians, its a matter of Tribal government corruption and tribal members trying to stop it.

Here are the latest releases from that tribal office; -------------------- From: "Wild Horse"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 18, 2000

RED CLOUD TRIBAL BUILDING, PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION, SOUTH DAKOTA:

On January 18, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. MST, Federal Bureau of Investigation Agents seized tribal financial records for 1998 - 1999. The federal agents were brought in by the Grass Roots Oyate, a group of concerned Oglala Sioux tribal members who took control of the tribal office on Sunday, January 16, 2000. Their sole purpose for this takeover is to protect files that incriminate the Oglala Sioux Tribal Treasurer, Wesley "Chuck" Jacobs and several Oglala Sioux Tribal Council Members.

Upon vacating the Red Cloud Tribal Building, FBI Agent-In-Charge William Grode stated that they will be travelling to Allen, South Dakota to the Oglala Sioux Tribal District Office to seize records there. Dozens of concerned community members in the Allen community are guarding the building prohibiting any tribal district elected officials from entering the building to tamper with files.

FBI Agent-In-Charge William Grode also informed the Grass Roots Oyate that warrants have been issued and agents are en route to the First National Bank of Gordon in Gordon, Nebraska to seize financial records involving the Oglala Sioux Tribal accounts. First National Bank of Gordon has been the Tribe's primary bank for fourteen years.

Agent Grode informed the Grass Roots Oyate in a meeting on January 17, 2000 that a grand jury investigation has been underway for some time. With today's seizure, the agent stated that indictments are sure to follow soon.

The Grass Roots Oyate have re-occupied the Tribal Office and will remain there until the Oglala Sioux Tribal Treasurer Wesley "Chuck" Jacobs and several of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council Representatives are removed from ffice.

Tribal Council Representatives have retaliated by putting in a request to U.S. President Bill Clinton and South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow to remove the Grass Roots Oyate from the tribal office using "deadly force if necessary".

Several others tribes have phoned in their support of the actions of the Grass Roots Oyate and are considering if they should take similar action on their reservations to deal with widespread political corruption.

As with all my posts on the Oglala Occupation Feel free to forward in its entirety -----------endquote--------- From: ishgooda@voyager.net

NOTICE FROM OCCUPIED PINE RIDGE OFFICE What is happening at Pine Ridge is strictly an internal situation of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. If everyone leaves it alone and keeps their own agendas out of it, the Oglala People will handle it just fine. I hope that happens. The so called "news blackout" is just a case of nothing happening that interests the various news agencies very much. There have been news reports coming out now for over 24 hours. It is hardly a case of the Rez borders being shut down. The Feds were asked by the protesters to be there and sieze records. This is not a case of another Wounded Knee occupation with APCs manned by wasichian surrounding a lot of skins. The protesters are following the elected president of the Oglala Tribe. Many of them are active leaders in the tribal government. They know how to handle things just fine without outside meddleing. The latest reports say that the protesters have NOT asked for outside support and for everyone to chill. Oglala politics can get rough and tumble, so this is not to say that everything is going to be nice and calm - but outsiders getting involved can sure make it worse, just as it did back in the troubles of the 70s and the Wounded Knee Occupation. Again, this is an Oglala vs. Oglala tribal matter. It is not Indian vs. whites, Indian vs Feds or anything like that at all - for now anyway.

take care everyone,

jeb

I don't like being manipulated. Rev. Thunderlight---you harmed your cause.

I was talking to J.J. Johnson in email this evening, when I *finally* got my ISP connection back (funny how it crashed at 1 am last night and refused to come back...)

A lot of folks have leftover Y2K supplies, and I'm sure some food contributions would be appreciated. Dancr, you were talking about this when everything blew apart. I can try floating around and seeing if some food contributions would be appreciated. (I'm sure they would. There are a lot of folks, particularily Elders, who are in want of the common necessities of life (didn't Dickens say that?)

Excerpts from the above NOTICE FROM OCCUPIED PINE RIDGE OFFICE: "...strictly an internal situation...If everyone leaves it alone...they know how to handle things just fine without outside meddleing...have NOT asked for outside support...outsiders getting involved..."

We are unlikely to ever know for certain who perpetrated the disinformation campaign that found its way to this forum. We do know for certain that the story, as it was reported on TB2000, was not just deceptive and manipulative, it was an outright LIE. There was no FBI standoff, there was no martial law. There were no roads being blockaded, discussions of house-to-house searches, media blackouts, or frightened protestors asking for help to get word out to the public. For all we know, the campaign of lies was orchestrated by the Council Treasurer himself (the target of this investigation), since it would be difficult to conceive of a more efffective means to discredit those who are protesting.

It's time to honor what the real protesters are asking for...to be left alone, without outside meddling or "support", so that they can resolve their internal situation according to their own wishes.

Please everyone be calm and rational.....even if this has turned out to be a small thing.....remember this, MANY SMALL THINGS WILL BREAK THE HORSES BACK.....the US Government is read that word IS guilty of doing many "small things" against the people that put it and the ones in office, in place. This has proven how valiantly the american people, and yes many from other countries will rally together, looking for the truth, and making it very akward for any who may have played "dirty pool" to hide the facts. I thank the Creator that this has not turned into a ballistic confrontation that it might have easily become. Each one of us responded with true feelings from the heart, which in todays world, proves that there are those who care enough about othere, even complete strangers. We should all be proud that we DO have enough caring inside to meet what could have been a tragedy. Those who feel bitterly betrayed, ask yourselves this......WHAT IF IT HAD COME DOWN TO GUNFIRE...BLOOD SHED....LOST LIVES......HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IN THAT CASE??? There is no betrayal, unless it is an intentional betrayal....a deliberate misrepresentation. All that i have watched, have shown great heart in their response to this event, and it has served a very important purpose. Focus on the wrong doings, and those who did wrong.....hold them accountable, not those who have acted in good faith......Please let your hearts lead in this ebbing of the anguished anger.....see what was intended, true brotherhood among many people

Those who posted falsely here should understand that such reliance on the "forked tongue" is functionally indistinguishable from the behavior of those they claim to be opposing.

Much the same applies to those who knew these messages were false and allowed them to stand in service to their own purposes.
