Cooked CPI numbers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Consideruing the way the gov. calculated the cpi, increased cpu power without increase in price = price reduction, what's next? Can we expect high performance ROM programs in automobile computers that increase the engine power without increase in price = automobile price reduction. Using the gov formula, we can probably get the cpi number to be negative. This number cooking is f#$#@ing outrageous. I am becoming very angry. Lenny

Naw, they'll probably just start appending "YMMV" to every report they issue.

The amount of corruption in every aspect of the Federal government has become so perverse that when we read about it at some point in the future we will be ASTONISHED !!

Any changes in the calculation of the CPI are thanks to conservative and libertarian economists (including Milton Freedman).

Right wing critics have been accusing the CPI of bias for years because it does not include a factor for technological improvements. They claim that real inflation is overstated. Their motivation is that increases in the CPI lead to increases in wages and social security payments, aiding in the growth of government and giving more money to people who are likely to vote for Democrats.

Just so you know who to blame.

Government, held accountable, produces nothing. Government left unaccountable produces nothing but lies, debt, and corpses.

If you think Milton Friedman had something to do with it, give us a reference. Many think it is a ploy to hold social security increases down without actually having to establish a policy or take a vote. Keep in mind that the Democrats have been in control of the executive branch for 7 years. It's interesting that no one in the legislature is complaining, so there is not too much disagreement between the liberals and conservatives. The Democrats like it because it makes the adminsitration look good and the Republicans like it because it helps to keep governemnt spending under control.
