Radioactive Cargo Passes Safely Through Panama Canal The Associated Press

PANAMA CITY, Panama (AP) - A ship carrying 44 tons of nuclear waste safely crossed the Panama Canal on Monday. It was the first such cargo to make the passage since the United States ceded the waterway to Panama.

Independent groups had expressed concern that terrorist or extremist groups could attempt to board the British ship, especially since Panama has no army to protect the canal. The country relies on a national police force for security.

But the Pacific Swan, carrying waste from a French nuclear plant to Japan, completed the eight-hour crossing without incident early Monday, said Jorge Luis Quijano, director of maritime operations for the canal.

"The crossing was peaceful and well organized," Quijano said.

The Washington-based Nuclear Control Institute had expressed concern about the trip, noting that environmental activists with Greenpeace boarded the Pacific Swan two years ago just as it was about to enter the canal.

Panama has insisted that is it ready to protect the canal, which was handed over by the United States on Dec. 31.

LOOSE LIPS YOU KNOW THE SAYING They just want to have bad sh*t go down by broadcasting this ships movements. How arogant our Corp media is. Bad enough this ship is an environmental disaster from the gate you have to broad cast it via ap newswire.

TO ALL MEDIA THIS A PUBLIC PROTEST DONT BROADCAST THESE SHIPS EXACT MOVEMENTS EVER AGAIN YOU PUT THE ENVIRNOMENT AND PEOPLE AT GREAT RISK THE CARGO OF THESE SHIPS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM USE ON THE EARTH FOR EVER.

Plutonium the stuff your mother should have warned you about.

Just say no to this nuclear crap, No votes to politicians that dont protect the environment, No commerce with companies and their sister companies that continue to deal with that stuff. What a terrible legacy to leave for our children

mike, people like you shouldn't be allowed to have children.

Mike, I agree with you. This situation could have been a real disaster. IMHO the movement of this material should have been kept confidential.

y2k aware?

didn't y2k teach us that one of the major problems in this world today is that too many people try to keep too many things confidential?

you think it would be hard to keep track of this ship's whereabouts if someone really wanted to hijack it?

just a thought.
