olympus 600-L What do I do when focus gets confused and can't take picture?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

When taking many pictures of small objects(I sell a lot of items online) I have trouble with the autofocus hunting around and not picking a correct focus. This will not let the shutter or any other function work. Low light seems to be a problem also even though I have a flash.

i got this from http://www.leesoft.com/d600l/OlympusFAQ.html

Depressing the shutter release button half-way causes the green light in the viewfinder to turn on steadily if the camera is satisfied that it has focused correctly. If the scene does not contain enough information for a correct focus, it will be necessary either (a) to aim the camera so that some image at the same distance as the desired subject is in the focus circle and does give information (usually requiring some sharp straight lines) or (b) to press one of the fixed focus buttons on the camera back. Then press the shutter release button half-way. Keeping the button half-pressed, you can then shift the view to the desired one and complete the exposure by pressing the button the rest of the way down. This procedure not only locks up the focus, but also the exposure setting, so that when you are setting the focus the camera should be aimed at a field which has a brightness similar to the one you wish to photograph. Otherwise the exposure setting may be incorrect. (...) The quick focus buttons on the D-500L/D-600L provide an excellent means of taking photos in low light situations which would otherwise be impossible for the autofocus system of the Olympus to lock on. There is an excellent site out there for those of you interested in the usage of the Quick Focus buttons, and their related results. You can view the page at http://charliemb.home.mindspring.c
