Tourney 3 - Hearing no debate, here's the game list w/ settings!!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

OK... I'm going to go through some of the controversial games and I'll mention my decision on things.

First we start with amidar. A lot of people were very fearful of marathons in this game. However, in asking Mark Longridge of what game the TG settings were to, it was the amidar set back in MAME 34, which is now amidaru - so therefore, we're going to play with the AMIDARU set - or the amidar(stern) set for those who like long names. The highest score is 272K - with TG settings - notman only got three extra lives I believe - and lasted about 25 minutes - which is NOT a marathon.

The second controversy was Zero Zone. I had a discussion with Pat Laffaye, who's still the Judging Coordinator(thanks again!), and he said that although most of us are mature enough to sustain the nudity, their kids might be seeing the players play this game, and that would not be a good thing. This I agree with. I also feel for the kids involved that we shouldn't have this involved. I really don't want people to think MARP is promoting nudity either. Therefore, it's OUT.

Thirdly, Turtles. Well... it wasn't much of a controversy... it was just simply triple types, and since amidar is in, turtles is OUT.

Fourth, Ghouls N' Ghosts. I asked Ben Jos to play this game on his P225 - and without sound, he had an average frameskip of 1. I think therefore it can run at 100% at a frameskip of 8 or less using a P166. Therefore, Ghouls N' Ghosts is IN.

Tron is 11th on the list, and that's in.

Devil Fish is 12th. It looks similar to lady bug and amidar. Arcade at home also says it's a maze game. Therefore, Devil Fish is OUT.

Finally, we have Ninja Kid II. Although it's original doesn't work, it's second set does. Therefore, using set 2(ninjak2a), Ninja Kid II is IN.

So, the final game list, including settings are:(* = changed settings required)

* 1. Gauntlet II(gaunt2) - 700 health, secret code = off, moderate difficulty(#4 I think)

* 2. Amidar - Stern(amidaru) - 3 lives, extras at 50K and 80K thereafter

* 3. Burning Rubber(brubber) - 3 lives, hard difficulty, one extra at 30K

4. Lady Bug(ladybug) - Medium, 3 lives, Extra life - spell EXTRA.

5. Xenophobe(xenophob) - Medium difficulty, 1000 life units / coin - 1 coin / game as always.

6. Marble Madness(marble) - normal difficulty

7. 10 yard fight(yard) - Normal clock running - Switches 1,2,5, and 6 are off.

* 8. Ghouls N' Ghosts(ghouls) - Normal difficulty, continues not allowed, 3 lives, extras at 30K, 60K, and 70K thereafter.

9. Tron(tron) - Difficulty: 5, 3 lives, extra life at 10K

* 10. Ninja Kid II(ninjak2a) - 4 lives, no extras, continues not allowed, normal difficulty.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I wish everyone the best of luck - this baby starts February 1st!

Two questions... 1. What have you decided about judges? 2. What do you think about shortcuts in Marble Madness? I used them in arcade too...

p.s. are you sure about no marathon in amidaru?!? I don't believe it, I'm preparing about it...

In my opinion, taking an allowed shortcut is completely legal, and cannot be considered cheating.

In Marble Madness you're even rewarded for it !!!

To Iur about Marble, sure you can use shortcuts. I use couple of them myself, and know couple more that I never use in record-making gameplay(too little time advantage compared to risk involved). Easy one is shortcut at the end of "silly-race", gives you couple of seconds + . Much harder one is shortcut at the end of "ultimate- race", that gives you 3 sec advantage. I didn't use it in the arcades, thought it was too risky. Now I think differently.

BTW where are you from?

I would upload my new record to marp, but keep getting message: "INFERNAL SERVER ERROR..."

To gameboy: Who checks the framerate of tournament entries, and how?

All judges will have access to a checker program and will be expected to use this checker on ALL recordings. This checker program will check for the speed of the game. If it's less than 90 %, that recording is doomed to qualify.

They will also have access to an autofire program that skito created - to check for autofire - which is also illegal.

I think Gameboy9 meant "doomed NOT to qualify" back there. Just so there's no confusion. ;)

By default, health per coin is 750 in Gauntlet II, and the secret code is on. This means people have to go in service mode to change these two settings. And if it is anything like Joust, they will have to do that every single time they record a game. I think this, and how to get into service mode should be explained somewhere very clearly...

Oh, and there is no Switch 5 in 10 Yard Fight.

Cheers, Ben Jos.
