greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

i notice that one of the forum posting guidelines is "if you have nothing of Y2K value to say--lurk dont post". Why then are 95% of the posts nothing to do with Y2K? Is it because Y2K was a non-event, and nothing is happening?

Exactly, my good man. Exactly!

I am a newbie here and yes, it certainly appears y2k is NOT the prime topic.

But I do enjoy the oil, stock market, economy, world politics type talk as this stuff affects our lives just as much as y2k would have.

It would be nice if this forum could continue on and on just for those other topics.

Dear Mr Sane,

It helps to cultivate an attitude of skepticism (some would say paranoia) to be able to appreciate seemingly off-topic posts as relevant to the issue of Y2K. Haven't you ever been lied to?

Two weeks ago the Government lied to me. ME! Can you believe it? They told me that a cash register on some base in Guam had failed, and, oh yeah, ONE surveillance satellite was down for an hour or two. I knew the moment they said it that they were just throwing the press a cookie...

Since then it has come out that the entire system failed, all satellites, and that they were down or severely impaired for DAYS, not hours. I wish they would have simply withheld comment, but they didn't, and it made me mad. How about you?

The Chairman of the newly established Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, Paul Hill, has been on personal leave since November; that organization, mandated to do what OSHA and EPA never could, is now all but defunct, after internal power struggles. The Timing of these events is exquisitely suspect, in my view.

Haven't you ever been lied to?

Regards,

The problem with people like you James is that you try to link anything, however tenuous or irrelevant to the supposed y2k.

-- Mr. Sane (hhh@home.com), January 16, 2000.

...and you, Sir, are a Pollyanna.

Mr Sane Don't let it drive you Crazy!!!!

If you don't like it leave it.

My definition of a rational person: "One who is called a polly by the doomers AND who is called a doomer by the pollies."

Mr. Sane, you're halfway there.

For those who think that Y2k is utterly finished, defeated and destroyed and that this forum has no useful purpose and that seemingly unrelated events will tell us nothing useful about the world in which we live, I offer this quite unusual link:

Link to Goofball.Com

Lady Logic

I was damaged before I got here.

If someone does'nt think the threat of Nuclear War/bio/terro/eco or whatever is a real danger to their lives then they haven't been reading the threads.

I agree wholehearted with islander.....finance, incl. stocks and gold are very interesting; I love to keep up with political intrigue and history. There are so many topics that are fascinating that can enrich us and make us better conversationalists and more interesting people. The other day, I brought up an intersting topic abou government shenanigans, and was disappointed to have the hearer say what's the point of reading about something you can't do anything about! Feelings like that make for a very dull person, I say!

LL, I'm reminded of this old story, something about a pot & a kettle.

Now, how did that story go?

-- Mikey2k (mikey2k@he.wont.eat.it), January 16, 2000.

Mr. Sane one purpose of the forum could be to unite like minded individuals with each other.

You and Lady Logic seem to have a lot in common. Perhaps you should pursue this and run off together.

This could be a win - win situation, you two will have found a soul mate and our forum will have found peace.

Mr. Sane,

Would you agree that the current price movement in crude oil prices may be in part directly related to the FED infusion of cash liquidity to stem pre-Y2K demand?

If you agree with the above, does it not follow that gold considered as a Y2K hedge may also show upward price movement?

Given that some minor Y2K glitches may yet have significant economic consequences, I for one am interested in reading as much as available on oil, gold, and geo-politics.

Y2K = Year 2000. Right?
