Y2K Doomsayers Smarter Than Most People Think

AURORA, Ill., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- While they've been the punch line of late night talk show monologues and criticized in political cartoons, several disaster-related organizations are praising so-called "Y2K Doomsayers" for taking Y2K precautions.

"Those families that prepared for Y2K were doing the right thing whether those supplies were needed over New Year's or not," said Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director James Lee Witt in a statement. "We congratulate those who prepared for Y2K and urge them to begin the New Year prepared for any eventuality."

FEMA is encouraging those who bought bottled water, batteries, flashlights and other equipment in anticipation of Y2K problems to keep the items on hand.

Thanks, John! After the fact, safe to congratulate ;^)

As happy beneficiaries of FEMA's excellent training, we'd like to vouch for the fact the FEMA prefers citizens to be part of a solution, not a problem ...

Dee - sorry, I'm not really back. I'm just swamped right now with this month's issue of the New World Order Intelligence Update, several reprint projects, and more 'on hold' ventures to tackle than I care to even think about!

I just couldn't resist posting FEMA's congratulations to those who prepared, however...:)

We're now running a special 'newswire' Y2K stories page on our website, which is global in sourcing and updated several times each day. You might want to visit and bookmark it, for more of the same.

I'm persuaded that Y2K has merely gone underground temporarily, but that the effects of data corruption, etc. will soon begin to surface on a worldwide scale. Journalists, like the rest of us, have demanding schedules and busy lives, and many of them are puzzled and disturbed by the amazing and sudden 'Y2K-OK' phenomenon we've witnessed in the past 12 days. Since many of them value story tips and leads to keep the issue alive at their own newspapers and media outlets, and because the abundance and variety of such stories doesn't really 'fit' within a discussion forum like TB2000, it just seemed simpler to create a separate venue for them.

So print, TV and radio journalists - you're invited to partake of the bounty there, too...:)

This link will take those who wish to bookmark it to THE Y2K NEWS PAGE. We'll keep it running, and updated, for as long as the stories (and our time) hold out...

Thank you John...I have bookmarked the link. I know you must be a very hard worker and a busy man. I wish you the best with all of your endeavors. I will visit your site regularly. I too have interest in following the Y2K story as it plays out. Dee is the name...intel is the game. Thanks again for your contributions.

I guess you've heard by now that your nickname is the Energizer Bunny... "he just keeps going and going and going...." =)

I should also have included this quote, which is definitely a Y2K 'keeper', from the same story...:)

"Our customers are prepared, not paranoid," said Steve Krawczyk, Coleman Powermate president.

-- John Whitley (jwhitley@inforamp.net), January 12, 2000.

Thanks John-

However

This IS a "PR" piece put out by Coleman Powermate Products.

I don't trust ANY PR..period.

I would love to see the FEMA quote in some form directly from FEMA. Anyone care to substantiate or verify this quote?

Original FEMA story in toto...

FEMA Urges Consumers To Keep Y2K Preparedness Items

http:// www.fema.gov/nwz00/consumers0106.htm

While the Y2K bug didn't bite, the preparations Americans made just in case are still valid. FEMA Director James Lee Witt is encouraging those who bought bottled water and extra food, batteries, flashlights and other equipment in anticipation of Y2K problems to keep the items on hand.

"FEMA recommends that families always have a disaster supply kit that contains items you'd need if services were unavailable for a few days," said Witt. "Those families that prepared for Y2K were doing the right thing whether those supplies were needed over New Year's or not."

Some news outlets have been reporting that people are returning batteries, flashlights and generators, among other Y2K preparedness items.

"Being prepared for a winter storm, a hurricane or earthquake is good policy," Witt said. "We congratulate those who prepared for Y2K and urge them to begin the new year prepared for any eventuality."

Witt added that those who bought more food than they can easily store, might want to consider donating it to area food banks.
