A SURPRISING "PLUS" FOR MY K2K FOOD PREPS

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

The flu is running rampant in my city. Almost every friend has had or has this dreaded bug. Haven't had to do any shopping so for this year. We are avoiding public places until this flu season is over. We're still flu free [touch wood or what ever your supposed to do].

An excellent reason to maintain your preps as BigDog pointed out in the other forum. I'm avoiding going into crowded stores as best I can (went into Safeway at midnight) and wearing a particle mask (paper) when I can't avoid it. It gets some odd looks but to hell with them; I'd rather stay healthy than worry about what some stranger thinks.

Other precautions. Avoid touching doorknobs or releases when you can. If you can't disinfect your hands afterwards, and when shaking hands, using a phone, etc. Keep your immune system at peak, eat well and take your nutritional supplements. Anything to stack the odds in your favor.

Hi Think I Can,

I answered your post on TB2000 about this, but think it is well worth repeating.

My father-in-law died of this flu on December 30. He was 84 years old and NEVER had colds.

So, please folks, if you really don't have to go out in public, don't. This is a nasty bug, and it would be wise to take some precautions.

Another item to carry in your pocket/purse is a small container of one of the hand sanitizers like Purel...studies have shown they are effective when you can't wash. We always carry one in the car, too. And refrain from touching your face as much as possible as the flu virus enters thru the mucous membrances.

Since I quit my job I have been keeping my grandbaby instead of the day care. She has not had the sniffles, fever, upset stomach, ear infections or a case of the snit fits since she left day care. I am very careful where she and I go during the day. To the park, and library and I use a baby wipe to clean the grocery cart handle when she is with me.

Carol, it is commendable that you keep the kids. I never had so much job grief in my life as open day care and their rules. Heaven's speed!

Same here, been avoiding the public places lately because of the flu. It seems like the virus is more resistant every year. So wash your hands and especially after going to the bathroom. And get a flu shot if you have to. There are two new drugs available to fight the flu virus but demand exceeded supply.

Be sure to get plenty of rest...you can fight it off much better than if you are overtired...

Another VERY dangerous illness around here is RSV. I don't know a whole lot about it, but it is a respiratory illness that hits babies and infants. The local hospital refuses to allow all children under 12 as visitors. Children who get it are very ill and can die in minutes if not treated agressivly. A nurse there told me that one desperatly ill child she had nursed for three days was finally allowed to go home. She gave the mother explicit instructions for it's care and she seemed to understand. When her shift was over she dropped by Walmart only to see that foolish mother strolling through the aisles with that baby in a shopping cart!! I just don't understand the thinking here. "Oh well, if it dies, we can just get another one.(shrug)" I guess I am just harsh. I have a hard time working up sympathy for people who don't give a damn until their children are very sick or injured. My point is, I agree with you all. Stay home, stay away from crowds and keep your immune system up. Someone has to use common sense, it may as well be us.

FWIW....Flu travels through the air. Washing your hands is always a good idea, but it won't keep the flu away.
