Anybody know any good snail mail periodicals/magazines that give true news, not the USA "Pravda" versions?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hi all- We read "World" for the Christian slant on news, and Washington Times for politics. And of course the good old internet. But I'd love to get my husband a few subscriptions to some good magazines. He is totally disgusted with political correctness, cover-ups, and all the stuff coming out of the liberal press. Anybody got any ideas? Pleaase give me a general idea of what sorts of topics your suggestion covers. Thanks a lot!!

Nation is left of left of center, they critique the clinton gang from the left.

The New Yorker occasionally breaks a good story, good for background, the "trials & tribulations of the elite" written by the elite, for the elite, but readable.

Wall Street Journal, read in between the lines, find out what money- crowd "A" is doing to money-crowd "B". get a student subscription for only $48/6 months...call up and sound young, tell them a school & a year of graduation.

Just my opinion, but these are the only pubs i've paid for in the last few years of the internet...

May want to try the American Spectator...pretty entertaining as well. (I'm a HUGE PJ O'Rourke fan).

And National Review but that's an obvious one.

Spotlight, to be honest, is a bit out in looneyville land. (Flame away).

--coupla good guy mags are Soldier of Fortune, and I also like American Survival Guide. SOF actually has some good stories from overseas, and is NOT politically correct, and some good tech articles. ASG has good nuts and bolts survival info. Home Power magazine is really good for alternate energy, and has the most ads for same out there, plus classifieds for some used stuff. None of them have nekkid wimmin, tho.....darn.......ROFLMAO! Jiss jokin, he'll maybe like them, SOF and ASG usually on racks at store, HomePower is harder to find, just a guess, but try www.homepower.com for that one. Good luck, every guy needs guy mags!

Err, a correction. The Spotlight isn't a BIT looney-tunes, It's a LOT :-). More so than I remembered, after looking at the site. Whoo boy. Obsessed by the "Bilderbergers". And they believe in Chemtrails.

There's a big difference between something like the Washington Times and The Spotlight..I don't know if you want to freak out your husband or not.

I'm unfamiliar with "World." Not certain where you are on the spectrum.

American Spectator runs the odd "Bruce Lindsey was murdered" stuff but by and large it's sane.

And I recommend still reading the "enemy" stuff. Never close yourself off to the opposition. The Nation is educational in showing what American Socialist goofballs still desperately cling to.

John, the Spotlight staff realizes that Truth IS than fiction! dig deeper and the stranger it gets! stay with the Spectator and you get news for old Republicans.

-- Diggs Deeper (observer@beentheredonethat.com), January 12, 2000.

I have taken Spotlight for some years: They have an obsession of HATE ISREAL everything that is wrong in the world is somehow connected to Israel. Also they feel the Holocaust did not take place it is just propaganda, that the Nazi were not all that bad. I am thinking about canceling my subscription with them because they are very biased along those lines.

I love Don McAlvany's "McAlvany Intelligence Advisor"- a monthly newsletter that is jam packed with all kinds of news and commentary. I can hardly wait for the MIA's arrival, and when it comes, I can't put it down until I read it entirely.

If you visit his website (www.mcalvany.com) you can see a sample portion of the newsletter, and even request a free issue.

Don also has a daily (M-F) news synopsis on his site, tho it is just barebones news, unlike his newsletter. He also has a most interesting weekly audio, also on the above website.

Why in God's name is Isreal the only country that if critized for policy or actions, those criticizing are immediatly labeled Anti-Semites? our "Special relationship" with Isreal costs 10 billion every year and never repaid since partition. In the seventies USS Liberty was attacked in broad daylight with many American dead. The Pollard spy scandal demonstrated that Isreal is and should be watched along with all others who claim dual loyalities. Many advanced American arms systems given to Isreal have been sold to potential enemies such as China! Now this is the truth and varified by Gov't and press. Am I a anti semite? NEVER and American Jews have contributed to America's success in all fields in greater amounts than their numbers indicate. Isreal need's to survive and we must insure this, But selling out your Allies for profit in the arms business can Never be condoned. We must be able to examine Isreals actions and criticise openly as we do ALL other nations without the label ANTI SEMITE, When I go after France,England or German policies that are not in the interest of the US,No group attacks claiming I am anti French,Anti English or Anti German, It is time for The Nazi infiicted fears and paranoias to be put aside and American Jews to look to the Religious homeland as Italians might view the Vatican as seperate from the policies of the Italian Gov't. Theocracy never has nor will it ever provide the freedoms that ALL Americans enjoy. When We all can suffer constructive criticism or dispense it with out being unfairly labeled a racist or anti semite we will all be suprised at what we will all learn about ourselves. (Is this an extreme view?) I'm open to suggestions or criticism.God prosper all right meaning Jews everywhere and let's get on with life

I know I'll get flamed for it, but I prefer the Washington Post to the Washington Times. Besides, the Times is owned by the Moonies, and had an incident a few years back in which several of their best reporters and editorial writers bailed out. It was allegedly over The Unification Church's attempt to set editorial policy.

Agree with the P. J. O'Rourke comment. Can't get enough of that man's writing.

I also go for Brill's Content, when I can find it. It's not on many newsstands, but you can find it in a lot of airports (I travel a lot). It does a very good job, IMO, of dissecting the issues behind the news, and the attitudes of those who report it.

If you want to see how reporters look at themselves, read American Journalism Review or Columbia Journalism Review. CJR even has a funny piece on their last page every issue where they display double-meaning headlines. You know what I mean, things like "Queen Elizabeth Having Bottom Scraped," "Iraqi Head Seeks Arms" and "Grandmother Of 18 Makes Hole In One."
