Is there anyone on this board who knows what they're talking about when it comes to power and can tell us if it's normal for 20 sites to be under 100% at one time?

Try this on for size.

I live where the temperature at this time of year is normally about 0. It's been 40 for the past few days. Our weather here has been unseasonably mild. I believe the same holds true for most of the country.

Could it be the need less power?????

NRC has historical data, you might be able to dig that up at their site.

NRC lists this data report as unconfirmed info from each site. My personal objective is just to follow the current trend. 20 does not alarm me. The total count is meaningless, it is the individual causes which I think are indicators.

If I lived near a plant with a questionable comment in this report, then I might make a few phone calls, and so encourage anyone here who may find themselves in such a situation.

Note as well Catawba 2 is back at 100%. This is the site we had a post about a few days back; someone said their dad was called in there to work (BG&E) and expected to be involved for 90 days.

This is the most hot shutdowns and scrams that
have ever happened. This is not normal.

didn't work as I had hoped sorry. (used 'pre' command)

-- (mike@noemail.net), January 11, 2000.

OK, it's the worst ever. How much worse? Twice as bad? Twice as bad as "pretty damn good" is still "fairly damn good". Is your power off?

-- Servant (public_service@yahoo.com), January 11, 2000.

Spider,

Nope.

-- John H Krempasky (johnk@dmv.com), January 11, 2000.

John:

Is my memory correct? I thought you were working around a figure of 9-10 shutdowns, hot standbys or scrams per week, as a threshold beyond which conern would be justified? What numbers did you propose to peg your "Y2K concerns" (if any) at?

Ok, guys. I pulled an old report at (almost) random. Went back two years, and picked the closest date to today. Got Jan 9th, 1998. It's here, btw. Now, I may have miscounted, but I got 23 at zero power for that day. I didn't bother counting the number below 100%.

Tell you what, you go digging. Start here, and let me know if anyone finds a day with more than 40 offline.

And just to be perverse, I checked Jan 12th, 1998. Yep, still counted 23 plants at zero power. Heck, I'm more curious as to where the reports for the 10th and 11th are. Weekend, maybe?

-- harl (harlanquin@aol.hell), January 12, 2000.

Jan. 10th, 1997- 22 plants at zero power. Jan. 12th, 1999- 10 plants at zero power. July 12th, 1999- 6 plants at zero power. July 10th, 1998- 12 plants at zero power. July 11th, 1997- 23 plants at zero power.

Just a cursory glance, I'd say they were getting better at keeping them up and running.

It is well within normal for 20 nukes to be below 100%, especially at lower than peak demand. Nuclear power is the most expensive juice in the grid, so it is usual for utilities to power these down first. There does seem to be some "mopping up" form Y2K going on, but thankfully nothing catastrophic!

I am THRILLED that Y2K seems to have enlisted some real concenr about the nation's nuclear reactors -- and indeed the 433 around the world. I am glad that folks "get it" that the hazards we were concerned about with Y2K (bad data, operator error, station black-out) exist every day. As reactors age and also as budgets are cut to deal with deregulation and competition the margins of safty decrease. With this trend, the risk level that Y2K presented ("abnormal") will be exceeded by day to day (normal) risk levels. The only alternative is to phase these dinosaurs out by phasing in efficiency and truly renewable energy options that are available TODAY!
