y2k benefits

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Here are some of the ways that I benefited from the y2k "deadline" last year:

I learned how to garden. I became proficient with a handgun and obtained my concealed weapons permit. I learned a great deal about alternative energy. I learned the ins and outs of shortwave radio communication (almost ready to take the novice test) I became proficient in construction and built a shed for my 300 gallon gas tank and a cover for my trailer. I am in the early stages of learning how to fish. I now have a lot of really good camping gear. I learned how to develop contingeny plans for almost everything. I became certified as a Community Ermergency Response volunteer (CERT). I will not have to go to the grocery store for 6 months (other than for perishable food). I paid off my credit card debt. I saved cash. I have put away a modest amount of hard currency. I learned to be a little more sceptical of the "experts" both government and anti-government.

I would say that over-all, 1999 was a pretty good year.

Oh.... I forgot one! I learned how to grind wheat into flour and use the flour to bake the best damn wholewheat pancakes you'll ever eat. 8-)

Good job I wish I did all this.

Just a question what is the hard currency?? Is isn't the Dollar a hard currtency?

Hi Alex! Your the guy in Puerto Rico, right? or is that another Alex?

Anyway, most people mean gold or silver when they talk about hard currency. I think you would find a lot of debate in here about the reliablity of the dollar as a standard of currency.

JoseMiami, Didn't you say a ccouple of days ago that you were never coming back here again? You said that you were a couple of blocks from the Cuban protests in Miami and that absolutely nothing was going on. I later saw on my TeeVee all sorts of crap (car hitting a couple of pedestrians, mass arrests, etc.) going on in Miami. Was I fed an illusion or did you miss that story? Thanks.

Yeah Think it, I did say that. I guess I am an adict to pain.

My point on the Miami post was that it had nothing to do with y2k. Cubans have been running aournd yelling and waving their hands in the air in Miami since 1961 - no big deal. That does not make for a collapse of the U.S. or martial law.

Good point. Welcome back!

Think it: This whole "y2k" process has been an interesting emotional rollercoaster. The other day I reached my frustration limit with apparent denial among y2k "doomers" (and I am one). It seemed to me that many were eagerly seeking out evidence of disasters/problems in order to validate their views and preparations. I just had a meltdown and said my piece.

It still seems to me prudent to stay prepared for possible problems, although I seriously doubt that any further y2k problems will cause serious disruption to our infrastructure or supply lines.

The thing that galls me the most, is that we really were "right" based on available evidence and expert testimoney, to prepare. The idiots that did not research, lived in denial and refused to prepare took a tremendous risk but came out "smelling like a rose." We who took the time to investigate, made informed decisions to prepare. We had good company. The government, big business and most of the 50 states did the same thing we did. Now we all look like fools for doing the right thing. Oh well, C'est la vie!

I do not regret my efforts and preparation, however, as is reflected in the post above. Overall, my efforts to prepare for a "5" through an "8.5" yielded beneficial results in my life and will continue to be beneficial over the long haul.
