Problems With Internet Speed. Anyone else?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Is anyone else having connnection speed problems. I have a US West DSL line in Denver,Co. that was operating fine(with a couple of problems in Jan.) until Jan. 1st. Not one problem since Feb. and top speeds of 400K to 700K download and 200K to 400K upload. Saturday the speed dropped dramatically and I downloaded a free utility that checks the speed of your ISP and connection. I am now getting 3K to 15K, averaging 9K. Have been in touch with US West since the 1st. and as of today(10 days later) problem STILL not fixed and Level 2 technicians will not return calls, say what the problem is or have it repaired.I have had problems with the Level 2 technicians and the supervisors before up in Portland,Oregon. Has anyone else noticed a decrease in their connection speed or having problems on the Internet?

An excellent site posted in an earlier thread. Run back through the 30 day charts. Very interesting material.

Yes, my connections are frequently slow, especially to this forum. I use three different methods to connect (Freewwweb, Mindspring, and by library freenet using the Lynx browser). The library freenet using the Lynx browser (text only) is the fastest, but it sometimes slows down. Ironically, the one I pay for (Mindspring) is the slowest.

Hi Charlie in Houston. Thanks for the great site. Very interesting the packet loss and response time spikes downward right after 1/6.

Sorry about above posted duplicates. Dave, this is not about websites, all the websites I have visited that were fast are now slow, everything is slow, way beyond slow( right now 1K speed) By the way, this site is always slow, servers can maintain traffic I assume

Allegedly my "speed" is the same.(according to the little green connection Icon WIN95 uses to show speed)it averages 40,000-44,000 (56 K modem) HOWEVER, I have noticed that web pages that used to dl fast are now slooow, also, I get "dead spots" in connections (my email will download about half, then stop, then sloowly start again.) I use Freewwweb, NetZero, and WorldSpy, have noticed it with ALL of them. (Since Jan 1, but getting worse, I think)

I'm finding refreshing pages a little slower today than normal. But posting replies has been a real drag. Usually I get a no-response from server and when if I check the thread the post doesn't show. So I try again with the same results. After a while I give up and then all of a sudden 2 or 3 copies of the post show up in the thread after 10 or 15 mins.

Sysops want to clean up my duplicates in:

and

Thanks.

It is hit and miss here with me. Some sites same speed now as usual, but others just crawl while before they were fine. ICQ just drags and drags. I had 2 bytes per second for ahwile on a file I tried to send through ICQ. Not kb, just plain bytes. Never seen it that slow before.

dorado,

I have a regular US West phone line and 56k modem. I live in Southern Oregon. Usually I'm connected at 57,600 bps.

But this past week I've been having connection problems with both AOL and my local ISP.

Today's OK ... BUT ... A few days ago, it was really weird. I couldn't use the net because my connections throughout the day were 7,700 bps and 9,200 bps. Plus I've been disconnected more frequently.

We've had a few power surges lately. I hate those, because I have to go around and re-set all of these d*mn digital clocks throughout the house. And my UPS got fried and doesn't work anymore. I could always plan on my computer staying up during these surges ... but not anymore! I have to go and pick up another one.

-- Cheryl (Transplant@Oregon.com), January 10, 2000.

Cheryl, Same here. A few days ago down to 2 to 3 bps, down from 500 to 700K. Of course US West says "no y2k problemo". No surges.......yet

Movement is very sluggish and disconnects are more frequent than usual. Central North Carolina (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Cary/Research Triangle Park).

Even with a 56K modem, the most my phone lines will allow me is 26.400 and, since 1-1-00, my connections have not been any slower. It has taken a lot longer to download and sometimes it seems to *stagger and hiccough* while downloading. Don't know what it means in terms of problems, but it's annoying enough to connect at such a slow speed without any other problems. Strnagely, my clock lost about 17 minutes last wek and I didn't notice until I was late to meet with my daughter, having used the computer clock as my reference.

Yes! And it's very frustrating! Disconnects are at an all time high these past few days! Yes! And it's very frustrating! Disconnects are at an all time high these past few days! Yes! And it's very frustrating! Disconnects are at an all time high these past few days!

(I've also noticed some weird duplicating text recently. Anyone else?)

56k flex/w 40 meg RAM on 486SX.... I've never gotten better than 8K on any download, must be my ISP :-) things haven't changed......

-- Netghost (ng@no.yr), January 11, 2000.

I've been on the net for 7 years now, and for the last 4 years I've noticed a big slowdown in January. I've always attributed it to many new net users coming online with their new Christmas computers....

-- _ (_@_._), January 11, 2000.

I've noticed a decrease in speed. I'm on the net all the time from work and I have noticed things are a bit sluggish. I noticed this starting around the end of December. It's not sluggish all the time, but more than usual. My AOL account has been terrible lately.

(I've had net access from work for about 7 years.)
