DVD Players that play VCD CD-R and /or CD-RW

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Are companies making new DVD players so we can play are VCD's on?

Anyway, can people send me a short list of what DVD players that do work, and include if they play CD-R and/or CD-RW. Also, what brand of Cd that worked. This way, people like me and others who are in the market for buying a DVD player, can make a good decision. Thank you all very much. Jeff jlampo@ravensoft.com

My Philips DVD plays DVD, VCD, CDA, and reads audio and video on CDR and CDRW.

Oh.... BTW the VCD is playabale almost any DVD player as you said, but CD-R or CD-RW and that is the REAL problem. I like to someone reply what DVD player reads CD-R's.

I, for one, agree with Lone Ranger. It was indeed rather close to a stupid question. But the original poster has his answer now with apparently little effort on his part (which is what truely bothers us). For my two cents, I would add that DVD manufacturers do indeed display CD-R/CD-RW compatibility in their specs, on THEIR websites. Resellers, in general, will not (much too much work for them evidently). The key to remember is that the specs WILL NOT say that they are NOT CD-R/CD-RW capable (which would be a poor selling point), but will say when they are (a great selling point). Point in fact, Philips is well documented and all of their currently manufactured DVD players will play CD-R/CD-RW. True, some have found that certain other players will play certain brands of CD-R or CD-RW, but why limit oneself? Buy a Philips with the features you want (they are all competatively priced, especially the 825 which has been on sale lately), play ALL CDs, and be happy.

Jeff, I'm neither condemning nor defending Lone Ranger but it would have done you well to inspect past items in this forum because this topic has been covered here many, many times even before posting your question. You look, possibly, under playing CD-R or somesuch here in this forum and you will find answers to what you want to know. In a nutshell ALL DVD players, with the possible exception of recent model Pioneers, ALL Philips, and first- and second-generation Sony, DO NOT recognize CD-R/CD-RW reliably.

Jeff,

If you haven't bought your DVD player, you may refer to http://www- us.sv.philips.com/specials/dvd/play.html for Philips DVD players that can read CDR or CDRW.

Sorry about that; I meant FIRST generation Pioneer DVD players [do NOT recognize CD-R/CD-RW].

I have a pioneer DV-515 and it plays homemade VCD4s (cdr and cdrw). Still have to check if it plays miniDVD projects (dvd formatted movie with 5.1 sound on a cdr or cdrw).

My experience, by taking a VCD I made to Best Buy and trying them is this, Yes the Philips will play CD-R and CD-RW but it hangs up for a few seconds whenever it finds an error in the encoded file. This became very annoying and I found, by reading the other threads on this site, that it is a common problem with a lot, if not all Philips brand players. After talking with a Philips rep and discovering that they were only made aware of this as of a few weeks ago and they weren't sure if a firmware upgrade was in the works for this problem, I was fortunate enough to be able to return it in exchange for a Pioneer 525 which plays everything and all the remote features work. I also found that basically all the brands played CD-RW but the Toshiba did a poor job

I have a Sony DVP-S550D, and it does play VCD on CD-RW, but not on CDR. In addition, the Sony DVP-S530D does play CD-RW only also.

I am using NTI CD-MAKER 3.5, and Memorex CD-RW drive. MAKE SURE CHECK THE 'FINALLY" BOX BEFOE YOU WRITING YOUR VCD SECTION, OTHERWISE IT DOES NOT READ.

Here is some informations that might help you also.

I personal tested the Pioneer DV-525, and Hatachi 250UP. These DVD play CDR, it should play CD-RW.

I have the choose Sony DVP-S550D due the feature and size that I like.

I just purchased the Panasonic DVD-RV21 from Cosco for $279 Canadian. It plays DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, and VCD
