Hello. My name is Ted. Bruce is my room mate and he has given me instructions on how to leave a message here. He wanted to let his friends here know that he will be alright. I hope that this works. On his way home from New York on Friday evening his car was struck by a drunk driver that ran a stop sign, about five miles from home. He has a broken arm, broken ribs, several bad cuts, and internal injuries described as minor. He will be in the hospital for about a week. He is very lucky. I am a local police officer, and I see the results of drinking and driving all of the time. The accident occured in the town where I work and I was on duty at the time. This is the first time that I have had to deal with this involving a very good friend, mangled and bleeding. It has been a very difficult couple of days. Please people, do not drink and drive.

No drinking and driving here, had 2 friends last year banged up real bad. One finally came outta the coma to start learning how to walk and everything all over again, like she is a little baby. The other may still have to have his left leg taken off. Both under 30 years old. Bruce was fortunate as far as that goes.

Tell Bruce our prayers will be with him, and you too Ted, that had to be rough! Also, tell Bruce we expect a full report on any y2k anomalies in the hospital equipment, as well as complete signed affadavits from the staff re: any equipment failures which occured prior to Bruce's arrival, including resulting interventions, heh! Oh, and uh if busses of people injured from a power plant exoplosion, or rashes from uh exposure to 4 million gallons of sewage. Yeah, that should do it...

Really. He's an addict, you know. Without his daily TB2000 fix he'll go into withdrawal and whither and die in only a matter of days. Forget about those broken bones and lacerations, the're nothing compared to the TB DTs.

You're a good friend, Ted. Take care of your friend. And tell him our prayers are with him. He's a lucky man, to be able to walk away from this one with his brain intact.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often? When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror. The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand.

Bob? Bob from church? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A Christian cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow.

Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform.

"Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this."

"Hello, Jack." No smile.

"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids."

"Yeah, I guess."

Bob seemed uncertain. Good. "I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit-just this once." Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement.

"Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?"

"I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct." Ouch. This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics.

"What'd you clock me at?"

"Seventy-one. Would you sit back in your car, please?"

"Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

"Please, Jack, in the car."

Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window. The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad.

Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license? Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again.

A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand. Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.

"Thanks." Jack could not quite keep the sneer out of his voice. Bob returned to his car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost? Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke? Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:

"Dear Jack, Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it - a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters. All three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until Heaven before I can ever hug her again. A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful. My son is all I have left. Bob"

Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he, too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived. Life is precious. Handle with care.

Some hospitals don't allow personal "electronic equipment" so it does not interfear with the hospital equipment. Tell Sysman to show them who is boss and ask, beg and demand access to one of their computers that has internet access so he can at least come here for a little while. If he keeps bugging them they may let him do it. It worked for me last year when I was stuck in the hospital for a week. I'll bet he is checking all of the "tags" on the equipment to see if they had been labeled Y2K compliant. Tell him to be good to himself and take his time getting back up to speed. Which arm is broken, his writing arm? :o(

I hope he has a complete recovery.

Could you at least post which hospital he is in? We could send e-mails through them to him. If they get enough maybe they will let him use one of their computers *evil grin*

I cried this morning when I first read this post, and I didn't respond because I thought I would be deleted. Well, since Y2K Pro is still here, I'm going to give it a shot.

I'm having a terribly hard time writing this letter because my best friend was killed by a drunk driver a few years back, and now the pain is flooding back. Her name was Andrea (Dee Dee) Koffman, and I miss her desperately.

Her killer only got two years.

Sysman, you stood up for me once, and I've always appreciated that. I wish I could return the favor and help you now. It's frustrating having cyber-connections because you can't hold someone's hand when you want to offer comfort, so suffice it to say, I hope you get well soon.

I need to contribute my best wishes as well. I'm just so thankful, for the sake of Sysman and everyone else, that the hospitals' "toast" condition Ashton and Leska promised us so ardently didn't come to pass. Of course, A&L have remained utterly silent on this topic since rollover, an irony I know Sysman would appreciate, and might cheer him up a bit. As we all know, things could have been much worse for him in many ways. I wish Sysman a speedy and painless recovery.

Flint, you just haven't read enough threads. What we said was that if the equipment stopped working, the hospitals would be Toast. Still true. We ennumerated the reasons extensively to you on several threads a long time ago. But your memory apparently is short-circuited :-) Our abundant THANKFULNESS at the LESS THAN A BITR for which we ardently PRAYED on many a thread FROM THE VERY BEGINNING is still running at 1008%, even enough to wish you a Happy New Year !!!!!!

I have been out of town all weekend, just turned on the computer. I hope you get to feeling better Sysman, and I hope the guy who hit you had some insurance. Some drunk rammed my wife while she was sitting at a redlight in September, whiplashed her pretty good and did moderate damage to her Lesabre. He didn't have an ounce of insurance, and fled the scene. When they caught him and ran his record it was his third hit and run in two years, and his liscence was suspended. The cops threw him in jail and will squeeze a pound of flesh out of him, but I was left with the deductible, medical, and lost time fooling with it, and wife was in misery for two weeks.

So sorry to hear about your accident, Sysman! Glad you made it out alive with only broken bones, but broken bones HURT! So Sysman, if you ever get this message in time; make sure you do ask those cute but busy nurses for pain meds when the last dose starts to wear off. Pain-free patients recover faster (helps keep spirits and courage up!)

Hey Sysman! get well soon... I recently was mugged in Denver, coupla low lifes jumped me, got away with $300 and I got away relatively lightly, just some stitches and a loose tooth. It really could have been much worse - I was unconscious and lying in snow. Luckily I came around and got some help - of course if things went another way these guys would be murderers. These types of incidents just serve to make you stronger, it's all a learning experience - just thank God you still have your health and your friends (just look at this thread!) and will quickly bounce back.
