My commodity account has been inactive for over a year; yesterday I was notified I have a 2K margin call because I sold 2 hog contracts. I'm not laughing!

Don,

On January 7, I posted about our business checking account being debited by a credit card processing firm/Chase Manhattan bank. We have never done business with either one of them. Our bank debited our account as an Automatic Withdrawal from these jokers even though we never signed an authorization form on this.

We are still trying to get straight answers. I have called five times and gotten five different explanations.

EDC, the credit card processing firm, says, "we put the money back in your account. What's the big deal?" Our bank says, "they put the money back in your account. What's the big deal?"

My husband and I say, "HOW DID THEY GET HOLD OF OUR ACCOUNT NUMBER?"

We ask our bank, "WHY DID YOU PROCESS THIS AWD WITHOUT A SIGNED AUTHORIZATION FROM US?"

Our business account number is floating out there somewhere. It makes one feel very vulnerable. Anyone who hasn't experienced this first-hand doesn't understand.

Just a dumb, naive housewife,

I had checks stolen this year by an employee of federal express who has yet to be caught. I know how you feel, the vulnerability. I would close that account and find another bank. Any bank not willing to openly discuss how they share info. does not deserve your business. I suggest you immediately contact all three credit bureaus, experian, equifax, and tras-union and give them a written statement that you do not wish to have anyone check your credit without first checkng with you. In addition, you can force them to not sell your information. It is your right under title 15 of the us code.

J Wheel,

I know you've posted your issue as a Y2k problem, fact is, you're a victim of poor banking policy. Somewhere along the line, someone messed up. So, as someone as susggested, change banks. But this doesn't smack of Y2K. Could be a million reasons why this happened, but with so many different insitututions of which you had no association, sounds hard to believe it's y2k that's really the cause.

Dan, without any real information in your post, whose to say what the cause is.

Shane,

Please go back to January 7 and look for "Credit Card Processor CONFIRMS 'it's a y2k glitch.'" I don't know how to hot link to that post. Since you haven't read that yet, I understand why you think it is not a y2k glitch.

I will be making more phone calls on Monday both to our bank and to NDC, the credit card processor. Also, plan to ask our lawyer to send a letter to NDC demanding answers.

The suggestion about contacting credit bureaus is a good one and I will check into that.

This bank is rated A- by Weiss Rating Service. It is the strongest bank in the area, although I dislike their customer service people. We are thinking of contact the bank president since the VPs we've talked to so far blow us off.

As for changing banks or changing checking account numbers -- I absolutely want to do this, but, get this, my husband refuses. You see, he bought the business from his dad in 1990 and the business has been around for 50 years. It still has the original checking account number and my husband is "sentimentally attached."

No, I'm not kidding. No, I'm really not kidding. He also said he doesn't want the expense of new checks and deposit slips, etc.

Meanwhile, I can only do so much. He runs the business, while I am merely a dumb, naive housewife,
