Irwin Puts' "Leica Papers" site (excellent)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

As contributed by Roy Feldman, Irwin Puts' Leica Papers site is one of the best resource on Leica lenses on the web. I just wanted it to have its own thread and be conveniently hyperlinked.

Yes its a great site if you need to feel good about your Leica purchases. But if it doesnt have a Leica badge its never any good in Erwins eyes. I love my Leicas but that site is Leica propoganda.

And what better place than this forum -- indeed this very thread -- can one refute any errors that appear on Irwin's site. Please... be my guest!

Roberto,

I got the book in April. I am still reading it and might put a book review on this site if there is any interest. It is VERY detailed and is not a fast read. If you are a shooter, it might not be a very useful book. If you like historical trivia and optical evolution described in extreme detail, it would be hard to find a single source as thorough as this book.

You can read a detailed verbal explanation of the performance of every Leica lens ever produced... and for all of the Erwin critics... yes, he does mention the lenses that perform poorly.

The book is not perfect and there are there are some things I would have done differently. I would have liked the lenses to be totally segregated by type, LTM, M and R. As it is, you start for example on the 50mm section and go through everyone by speed, which all of the mounts being mixed together. Sometimes the mount is clearly mentioned, sometimes not. As an M user, it would have been great to simply go to the "M section" and read away. Dennis Laney did this in his lens books, and it does make the reading easier.

Roberto,

What is the ISBN number for the book? That will help me find a copy.

Thanks.

The site for the "Classic Camera" is:

Thanks for the ISBN number. Amazon.com do not have it. What a shame. So much for "Earth's biggest bookstore"...
