In "The Haunted Palace", who or what is Porphyrogene?

Porphyrogene means a royal figure, and is often associated with the color purple. It is an archaic word, infrequently used with its root, phryro and gen, found in Latin. In the context of the poem, the ruler of the house is the King or some other kind of royalty, adorned in purple. By the end he is no more.
