Was Y2K a big money making HOAX????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Y2K was the big hoax of 2000 many people mislead and a lot of money made on it we don't know who or how it got started not every one making money was in on the hoax they were serious about what they were saying just caught up in the frenzy. We are having problems but we have always had problems and will always have problems.I was just as prepared and worried as any one this is the only thing i can reason Y2K to be.It was so logical with the gov.acting the way it did giveing out a little bit of information just to make us think they were hiding some thing for who really belives the gov tells the truth.I wonder what is behind it all?I guess time will tell or will it.any more thoughts I'm not sure i'm right just a thought.

I blame the squirrel! Yes definetly I saw him. He had a big tail. He looked pretty cute and harmless. But believe me don't you trust him for one minute. Yep, it was the squirrel.

Wondering, it wasn't a hoax. We lucked out.

Mara I don't think every thing about it was acomplete hoax and i'm not talking about the people on this forum I did a lot of research and for every thing to go off like it did something smells fishy. Some towns didn't do any thing and there utilities are still working.Big bussines did a lot of work with there data, which was important.

Wondering:

It wasn't a hoax. There were a lot of crtical systems that would have failed that got fixed. There are a lot of less critical things that are getting fixed now, hence the Y2K bug reports.

BTW, a little punctuation in your posts would make them a lot easier to read.

Many of the same people who were proclaiming Y2K as something that would bring about the next stone age stated that it was a problem that could not be solved. The media believed these folks and contributed to the Y2K Hysteria.

When Y2K did not cause the problems predicted in the media the conclusion was there was never a problem. The same sources that fed the media hysteria (and were wrong) are still being relied on to proclaim now that there was never a problem. (There could not have been a problem since we were told it could not be fixed!!)

There was a problem. I spent (as did many others) the last two years of my life ensuring the systems I was responsible for were Y2K ready. There was no way of knowing, exactly, what problems could have been caused by Y2K failures. NOBODY knew. It was this uncertainty that was exploited by some and transformed into a world-wide crisis.

Some point to countries that supposedly did nothing and had no problems as proof there was no problem. It's a falacy to assume this. The problems I saw and helped resolved were minor problems. I'm sure these unprepared countries have experienced these minor problems. However, it was risky for them to take the chance. They were lucky.

Y2K was a problem that needed to be addressed. It would have been irresponsible to have done nothing to fix it. Because it was not the cataclysmic event some were predicting it to be means those people drew the wrong conclusion as to the problems' seriousness and the ability of those in IT to remediate the problem. Does not mean there was no problem and it was a total hoax.
