CONFIRMED LIGHTS OUT GLITCH!!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Within just 5 days of the rollover, I've had my front porch AND shower lightbulbs burn out. I suppose this is just ANOTHER "not Y2K related" incident???

TPTB cannot spin this one!!!

Mabe the bulbs were not Y2K -OK.

It's a knee-slapper.

Don't worry "-- cl@sky.com", the last of the Doomies around here don't seem to have much of a sense of humor. Wonder why that is?

Go easy on the Doomers...everyone has a right to their own opinions. And, realistically, most of them aren't as hardcore as they give the impression of...I mean, come on..if they really were, why the hell are they still using their computers, and phone lines, and utility provided power, and.....you get the point....

Not to mention, I would've expected all the REAL hardcores to go out and fall on their own swords...since that didn't happen, I think people just use it to get others going....

These polly idiots will be the first ones to complain if supply line problems develop or to riot if their paychecks are not able to be processed.

I have recently had trouble peeing. I am near 50 and I frequently have to get up at night to go to the bathroom. I have to shake it more than before to shut it off. It has definietly gotten more serious since New Year's eve. Acute AND chronic I would say. I can't help thinking that it might be y2k. Perhaps the sistemic "degradation" that Dale Way was talking about.

-- JoseMiami (caris@prodigy.net), January 06, 2000.

Probably why the term Dimbulb was invented.

-- Dimbulb get a light (Dimbulb@lights.fading), January 06, 2000.

Maybe your light bulbs had embedded chips in them, with a RTC and CMOS chip that was hard-coded. Ever think of that, smart-guy???

This was a preparation forum for an unknown event at the time. Either you prepared or you didn't care. The Bull shit on this thread indicates the latter for those participating. It takes some intellegence to understand why this forum exists. Once again, obviously some rather dense blind-risk-taking careless run-of-the-mill bubba's are apparently not Getting It. The population of the World is too high. The intellegent, caring, considerate people of this planet are waiting for you idiots to make another mistake. Evolution tends to make future brains on this planet smarter. You people are the exception.

Jose,

"I have to shake it more than before to shut it off."

Use a hose clamp!

"Don't worry '-- cl@sky.com', the last of the Doomies around here don't seem to have much of a sense of humor. Wonder why that is?"

It's just that "Stinky duh Klown" -- in all his fetid glory (and each of his cookie-cutter incarnations) isn't really very funny at all.

Or maybe it's just that it's hard to laugh while you're holding your nose.

Feller,

Now, I will agree that there MAY BE some inconveniences based on long- term effects of computer issues related to Y2K, mainly due to poor patches and quick fixes. Do I think that civilization will be hit with a catastrophic meltdown. Nope. Actually, not bloody likely. Do I think there will be some inconveniences? I think it's very possible.

As you stated, the thread was initially started for people to "prepare for an unknown event". Since that initial date has rolled over, is the next course of action to keep shouting "The Sky Is Falling" like Chicken Little, even those the Sky, indeed, in Not Falling -- at least not at this point?

But someone asked a good question: If people were really believing that society was going to melt down and it was time to head for the hills, why ARE they continuing to operate devices that they claimed would be the "scourge" of the planet? Why aren't these people living in the woods and the hills, sitting in fields and eating crickets?

Fortunately for us, the majority of the intelligent, caring, considerate people will carry on, multiplying and producing children to carry on improving futures on this planet. And do you know who they are? They're the ones that didn't scream "Panic" and head for the hills at the first sign that the utility bill was a little bit higher than normal. Those people that "headed for the hills", fortunately for us, are not ones that easily attract mates, and are not subject to being involved in reproduction.

Sorry folks, make whatever fun you want of this. I've been monitoring grid power in the northeast since before Christmas. We are seeing dips and surges. I've replaced 4 regular bulbs since 12/25/99. I've got the charts to prove it. You show me the facts that its not happening or shut up.

-- gomer (pollysridiots@dot.com), January 06, 2000.

I've lost a hallway light and kitchen light since rollover! And it gets dark in the jungle...

-- Mad Monk (madmonk@hawaiian.net), January 06, 2000.

Bubba, I think you may have tunnel vision. The reputable people like Stan Faryna, Big Dog, Old Git, Diane J. Squire were the hub on this forum. They did not suggest any of what you are suggesting. They said to prepare for the unknown. People outside that hub were just that, outside the hub. The freakazoids you are referring to did not reflect mine or the "hub" peoples opinion. You need to recognise those who were responsible and irresponsible. Radical, useless pollies and other characters like the infamous Al-d, were not considered a part of this forums clique.

Feller:

Some responses to your cerebrally-challenged thoughts:

>>for an unknown event at the time.

You know what? Oct 23, 1991 (some random date) was an unknown event on Oct 22, 1991. So was every day between then and now Did you prepare for each one of those days or for only the BIG ONE? Hey, like fire insurance, right... who's to say some catastrophic event (an asteroid, meteor, melting of the polar ice caps, the O.J. jury decision, etc.) couldn't have happened on any of those days?

>>Either you prepared or you didn't care. That's exactly correct. Why should anyone care about something they don't believe is going to happen? I don't beleive either of the 2 bridges I'll cross on the way home from work will colapse, so I won't wear my life preserver.

>>It takes some intellegence to understand why this forum exists. Obviously not.

>>Once again, obviously some rather dense blind-risk-taking careless run-of-the-mill bubba's are apparently not Getting It. I just love the DGI/GI crap. As if the gloomers are the only "enlightened" and intelligent people on this earth. I GI just perfectly about the technology, and the failures that can (and have) occured. I've worked in IT for the past 15 years. I, like other "pollies", felt the risk of the consequence of any failure(s) was not worth the effort of any preparation. Here's where the GIs just don't "get it": just because there's a glitch, problem, or failure doesn't mean that there's going to be some catastrophic consequence.

Gomer: You're keeping charts on your light bulb useage ? Ever thought about collecting rubberbands ?

-- Capt Dennis (capden@hotmail.com), January 06, 2000.

Gomer,

The company I used to work for had me work very closely with the Utilities on the Eastern side of the country. In fact, I still talk to some of the people in those companies frequently. And these aren't all management types, either. Most of the people that I still contact are people that actually know why things work and why they don't.

If you'd paid attention over the past few years, you'd probably see the same fluctuations. Not to mention the utility infrastrutures on the East Coast are very, VERY old, for the most part, and probably need updating like everything else back there. I can guarantee you that old lines and transformers do NOT have issues because it's suddenly January 6th.

-- Bubba (loopy@home.net), January 06, 2000.

Feller,

So are you disassociating yourself from the majority of the crackpots on both sides, saying that there are, oh, about 4 people that just said "beware" and felt that was good enough?

Merely a question.

-- Bubba (loopy@home.net), January 06, 2000.

ROTFLMAO!

Thanks cl, I needed that.
