"Not a Y2K Problem..." (Yeah, right!)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

We are seeing a lot of press releases and news stories that claim that a specific problem is "not Y2K related..." Having spent a third of a century in Data Processing, my first reaction to a problem is to see what was changed last. That's the most likely cause of the problem. In almost all current cases, that would be the installation of Y2K fixes!

I feel the phrase of "not Y2K related" has already joined the likes of phrases like "planes will not fall out of the sky", "computers could mistake 1900 for 2000" and so on. Just the way I view things. YMMV

People will look at the obvious. From now on there will be no Y2K problems, only problems. If a chem plant blows and burns how ya gonna know WHAT caused it??? Most businesses do NOT do post mortems a la the FAA or a grand jury investigation, they simply want to get back to selling product or services. The business doesn't want to know 'why', they want to know 'when'(it will be fixed).

So from now on 'Y2K' will be buried. It will be anything BUT a Y2K problem.

My 20 cents worth of pair-a-dimes.

Mad Monk, by the way how are those coffee trees of yours doing.Any growing tips, please.

"Not Y2K related...right?"

I am in charge of our Fixed Asset Inventory system, and have spent much of this afternoon identifying the bugs in the system. For example, a report that is supposed to indicate replacement dates for equipment gives nonsensical replacement dates and astronomical values. This is what Y2K will bring...bugs in accounting and inventory systems. Not life threatening "sexy" stuff, but problems nonetheless:

TYPE DESCRIPTION SERIAL TAG BLDG ROOM QTY 1450 PENTIUM CPU ITECH COMPUTER 0100024885 R R 1

ACQ REP. REPLACE- SALVAGE REMAINING FAIR MARKET DATE YEAR MENT COST VALUE VALUE VALUE 12/02/97 3912 1850.00 37.00 96570.00 96607.00 LIFE 15 YRS SALVAGE 2%

==== This is from a REAL report. Note the replacement year "3912" and Remaining and fair market values of this asset (computer).

Re: coffee trees.

One is doing extremely well; almost 4' tall. Expect coffee beans this year. Another is coming more slowly, the third died.

Papaya, orange, breadfruit, tapioca, and Banana doing well...

Sorry, guys, the formatting just didn't work, so my previous post is confusing to look at...

It would seem that we have definatly moved into the new arena. The question is will the polly's start preping?

-- Michael Erskine (Osiris@urbanna.net), January 06, 2000.

Shoot, will I start preping? Damn, I am a procrastinator. Someone please convince me. Ed, where are you? It REALLY is time for your opinion of what you are seeing? Just do it. Let them say what they will, they have been shown to be what they are...

The phrase, "not y2k related" reminds me of that phrase, "I did not have sex with that woman"...
