Response to GameBoy and others

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

This is in response to GameBoy and others who were offended by my statement on Snipercade. Wow, I didn't realize my statement would offend so many... My apologies to all of you whom I did offend with my "casual gamer" remark. My intent was NOT to belittle MARP, or it patrons, by any means. The tournaments you run here, while I do not participate, are very well organized and thought out. Yes, there are some serious gamers here. My statement came from looking at the general scoreboard, and reading all the problems you have with people of "questionable character" and their scores. Yes, MARP has several world class players and I would not presume to debate anyone that argues the fact that I have some rather pathetic scores... :) My point was simply that Mark is the official scoreboard keeper for Mame (yes Ben, I too can decide what scores get into the book as per Walter), and I didn't want to impede the work he is doing, or confuse people, by having two separate boards for TG. MARP is, at this point in history, not an official TG board, and in all likelyhood, more than 95% of the scores on this site will NOT make it into the book of records. Why? Lack of a true means of verification and validation. If everyone was to use TG v3 and their scores were validated, then I see no problem at all with ALL MARP scores being incorporated into the book provided Mark can get to them in time for printing. :)

Again, my apologies to all and thanks for reading.

Ron

I should make an additional clarification.

Just because someone uses m35tg3.exe doesn't mean a score automatically gets accepted. They still have use MAME TG settings, which was started by Walter Day, and I've added to it over the months. And the judge(s) should use all means possible to establish that the game was running at the correct speed.

I welcome Ron Corcoran and Chris Moore's input for mame high scores. But after all the work I did I'd like to reserve the right to collate all the input from Ron's and Chris' sites into one unified whole. My role in all this is to ensure accuracy. Ron is completely in control of all the Commodore computer scores, and Atari 2600 scores as well. The job of verifying and judging all those scores is his domain, and certainly all those scores will see publication in the second Twin Galaxies book.

Ron's doing a great job promoting and running Deca2000. But I think everyone understands that my input into Deca2000 is to help Ron make everything 100% accurate (or as close as possible) so that all the submissions from Deca2000 do progress cleanly into the 2nd TG book, and that includes all compliant scores from MARP as well (for players who wish to be included of course).

It's a great hobby, and never in my dreams could I predict that all this would happen.

Also, thanks to Chris Moore for including a m35tg3 label in the script for INP submissions, I really appreciate that. Could you update your links though? My site is currently:

TG submissions can go to: mametg@hotmail.com

Thanks to everyone
