Hampton Roads VA news reported today that we have the highest count ever, and hospitals are having extra staff come in.

This strain is a real bear. Local news reports detail six hour emergency room waits, cancelled elective surgery, and admission turn- aways as hospitals are trying to deal with this thing.

I've had my case since Christmas and it still shows no sign of really letting up. Cory Hamasaki has my sympathies in his battle with the bug.

I don't want to start flaming over this, but thank God the infrastructure is functioning and medical services are available. I can drive down to the local pharmacy, purchase my medication and then go back to a warm home and crawl into bed while I try to get over this thing.

Can you imagine the impact of such a flu outbreak on a society battling failures of power, water, sanitation and distribution systems? Trying to deal with all of those problems and this flu might be impossible. How many would succumb under such circumstances?

We dodged a bullet at rollover. Even Ed's mild three day blackout scenario would have seen lots of people quite possibly die from flu while they're merely suffering from the flu now.
