'00 Long-o and Night Chumps

While Mook is certainly loathe to the spreading of rumors, it is interesting to note that there are now some in the o' community who would have you believe that RMOC and/or BSK has made some noises over a possible bid for the US night-o and long-o chumpionships in 2000.

If this continues to develop, it would be worth OKers keeping an eye out west!

I reckon it ain't no rumor.

While rampant rumours are flying, I would like to add fuel to the fire by saying there is much speculation in the homeland as to when 'sup will be updated. Rumour also has it that an undisclosed amount of fleece in OK colors has been procured by a certain couple living in Northern Kansas City.

While on the subject of rumors, it certainly has not gone unnoticed by UOKH Mgmt. that certain Homeland OKers would be worried about the lack of recent updates to 'sup. (please give the Homeland its due respect with a capital H) That being the case, it must be mentioned that updates to UOKH are unlikely before the middle of next week and OKers ought not set their hopes too high. This is the case barring a really major OK event that goes unreported elsewhere.

But there is some good news... January should see a really exciting lineup of new UOKH material. For instance, we hope to get an interview with OK's founding father, publish a 1999 Year in Review, and take a nostalgic look back into OK history in Peggy's Accident: A Retrospective. There will be the usual "exciting" 'sup as well.

The tentative schedule for the Rocky Mountain 1000 days has the night- O' champs on August 11 (at Lake George, CO) and the Crystal Relays on August 19 (at Laramie, WY). There are lots of events between these two dates.

The schedule would make it tough for most of us to attend both events. I don't have enough vacation to do the entire 1000-days. I don't think I'd be too interested in traveling to Colorado for the night race, then back to KC, then back to Wyoming for the relays.

If I am forced to choose between the Crystal Relays and the Night Champs...I don't know what I'd do. If OK had a full team (five people, I think), I'd definitely pick the relays. On the other hand, if running the relays on a mixed-club team was the only option, I think I'd favor the night orienteering.

Speaking of rumors, there's a new one going around about OCIN and the bidding war for the Short Course Chumps. Apparently the Cincinnati club wants to host the event April 1st on a Hueston Woods South map and has been using some pretty "heavy-handed" tactics to silence any critics to their plan. In fact, if you believe the hype on their web site, the deal is signed, sealed, and delivered.

In reality, if OCIN is going to host a US Chumps, it might as well be the Short Course. That way the first runner on the course is not at quite as big a disadvantage as in a longer course. I think it should be possible to run a short course without drinking water.

I don't know if the groundhog saw its shadow, but the USOF BOD apparently saw the light and awarded the 1000-days the night and long-o chumps. I guess it will be the first time ever to hold that event in 2 different states. Sounds fun to me.

Looks like the 1000-days has "sold out" to Brunton! Will it be renamed the "Brunton 1000-days" or maybe just "Brunton days"?
